Jack told Ennis that he planned to
overwinter

Ennis sat at the kitchen table with Jack's

. Jack's
mother
,
stout
and careful in her movements as though recovering from an operation, said, "Want some coffee, don't you? Piece a cherry cake?"

In the years following Ennis's reunion with Jack, Alma changed gradually from a docile, patient
wife
into a discontented
termagant
.

were finishing up in the powder room, Randall talked to Jack about a
womanless
