Four reasons you should go see "Casino Royale"
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:18:09 pm »
1.  The stunt work, especially in the construction site scene, is amazing.

2.  Daniel Craig's smokin' hot body and the kind of blue eyes you can see across a room

3.  It seems to take the Bond franchise in a darker, more vigilante (I likey) direction.

4.  A little matter of a trailer from a certain movie being released this March.  (i.e., Jakey on the big screen again, and not one moment too soon - by the way, everyone in the packed theater chuckled at "Eagle Scout.  First Class."  And everyone around me murmured "That looks good" when it was over.  I'm a tad biased, so it's hard for me to judge.)

It's ALL good.

I will definitely see this one (especially for the Zodiac trailer...  ::) )

BTW Lucise, I love your Shane avatar :)
‘cause the truth is, I already give him everythin’ I got to give, more than I ever even knew I had; ‘n it all for him, all of it, him who is my brother, my father, my child, my friend, my lover, my heart, my soul; my Ennis.

I'm a bit hesitant.  I heard from someone who has already seen it that they are basing the movie more on Ian Fleming's stories, Bond isn't the cinematic Bond we all know and love (shaken, not stirred).  I understand they want to humanize Bond, to show growth by essentially starting over, but the whole point to James Bond was that he was above and beyond what mere mortals could do.

I understand that.  And I think it's the reason I like it better than all the others (except maybe for the Sean Connery ones - yeow).

You still believe he is above and beyond what mere mortals can do, and that's chiefly because Daniel Craig was the perfect selection to both humanize him and show how super-human he is.  The guy moves like an Olympic sprinter - maybe even more elegantly.  You really believe he can catch what should be a faster man or a moving vehicle just by running.  And he's buff enough to make you believe he has super-human strength, too.

I liked seeing how he got his first Astin Martin and how he came to like his martinis.  Maybe I'm all about demythologizing icons, I dunno.  But it didn't take too much away from the idea that he's extraordinary.

It actually came closer than I've ever seen to humanizing M, too.  If you don't want to see just a glimpse of a softer side to her, you might want to steer clear.

I'll see it over the Thanksgiving weekend when I'm visiting family. I'm sure it will be showing there and it will give me something to do.  ;)   What glamorous cities/locations does Casino Royale take place?

The Jake movie trailer makes the film sound worthwhile.  So now we know Jake's character in ZODIAC is a cartoonist who was an Eagle scout member. Okay!

Actually, an Eagle Scout is a member of The Boy Scouts of America - it's the highest rank you can attain within the Boy Scouts.  A First Class Eagle Scout is the highest rank you can attain within the Eagle Scouts - it's kinda synonymous with being a four-star General in a much lesser way.  (My husband and brothers were all Boy Scouts who aspired to Eagle Scout status but didn't quite make it there.)

If you want to know more about Jake's character, Robert Graysmith, he really exists, or at least used to (I think he's still alive).  He wrote a book called Zodiac upon which the movie is based.  Here's a link to a blurb about the book at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Zodiac-Robert-Graysmith/dp/0425098087/sr=8-1/qid=1164057048/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-9360303-7900854?ie=UTF8&s=books

Below is what I know about Robert Graysmith, but it may contain SPOILERS, so skip it if you don't want to know too much about the movie going into it:

SPOILERS:

I know basically that he was a (political?) cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle and somehow got interested in the Zodiac killer case - I think when the guy (or a copy cat) started sending stuff to the paper - and another book of his postulates who the killer really was: a guy who knew the first victim and who was questioned by police but  never charged with the crimes.

Oh gods, yes!!  When the announcement was made as to who the new Bond was, the women around my cubical were like 'Who's that?'  And I replied, 'Did you see 'Lara Croft - Tomb Raider?'  You remember the naked guy?  That's him.'

The women all went 'Oh.'  It's ok then.  ;D

Is the above true, Barb?!?!?!?!?  I replied to my friend that it was going to be disappointing if he wasn't the same Bond, but if they were going to show how he became the Bond we all know and love, then that would be lots of fun!  Is this the case?!?!  If so, then I'm first in line!!!

Yes, it is absolutely true.  Think of it as "Bond Begins."  :)
