OT here, but since we just discussed dubbing/subtitling movies here:
I just skimmed throught the cinema programs of my area when I had a light bulb moment. They show Pan's Labyrinth in the original language with German subtitles and I remembered seeing the movie on my flight to the US last year. I saw it in Spanish with English subtitles. And I remember that I found it so very easy and effortless to follow the events on the screen and the subtitles simultaneously.
Unlike seeing movies in a foreign language with German subtitles. The latter requires much higher attention and is simply more difficult. And German is my native language, English only second!
English is just more on the spot than German. When you translate a text from English to German, the German version is always a good part longer because in many cases it requires a long-winded phrase where in English one or two words are enough.
I think this is one reason that the Germans dub movies instead of subtitling them.
