Good, well-written fanfiction?

Can you recommend any?

What little I've read is just dry & factual, as in, "Ennis replied to the postcard. Then he went to work. Then he saw his kids. Then he ate dinner... etc."
I haven't tried to write any so I can't talk, but the point is I'd like stuff that's well-written and isn't too out of character (marching in Pride rallies or something.)
(Hot scenes are fine though.)

Thanks!

I discovered this story last night (it's for over 17's definately):

http://jennasts.livejournal.com/

I'm not really into fanfiction, and i was particularily disinclined to read any BBM stuff simply because i thought it would ruin the story and film for me, but this is very good. It's from Ennis POV, some time after the final lake scene, and begins with Ennis waiting for Jack's postcard.

Lol! I'm sure some of it is well written and creative but isn't fan-fiction a purely teenage obsession? I remember eavesdropping on my older sister and her best friend when they were teenagers as they weaved this ongoing story involving themselves and the Beatles.

Spent the better part of the afternoon reading (when I should have been cleaning the house) the entire fan-fiction at http://jennasts.livejournal.com and really enjoyed it. It's funny that oilgun talks about his older sister as a teenager writing stories involving the Beatles and her friends. I used to do the same in high school and my friends really enjoyed the stories. Bringing back some very old memories.

All ages enjoy fan fiction, and I've seen articles where the peak years of interest are the thirties. It is primarily a female interest though. The best fan fiction I've read is better than many published novels, it is often more passionate, and is willing to go places that respectable fiction cannot go. One of my favourite writers had a novel published earlier this year, and I've seen fan fiction pulled from the net in order to be published. There are enormous amounts of drek however, especially if you go to somewhere like Fanfiction.net, where a lot of the writers ARE teenage girls.

I haven't read any BBM fic. The story is so perfect that it doesn't need anything added imo.

There's quite a few stories at FanFiction.net - some good, some pretty lame. The best written I've read so far is called "Human Interest," by MadLori. The link is:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2759902/1/

It's 24 chapters, and there's a follow-up called Two Crows Joy. If you're open to an alternate-universe (happier) look at the lives of Jack and Ennis if they'd taken a different path, I think you'll enjoy it. The author does tend to go a bit overboard in integrating the big-city female reporter into the story, but I suspect it's her way of further personalizing the Brokeback experience. I can't fault her for that.

This is a great piece of writing. I finished it in a couple of days. I was so taken up in the story, I printed out three or four chapters to read before falling asleep at night. GREAT! Two thumbs way up for MadLori......

I loved both of these; thanks for posting their links, balrog20-ressurected. I'm responding in part so that I can find this thread for later--I had never been much for fanfic before Brokeback Mountain, but have read quite some good examples since, and could probably provide some links after doing a little research.

This is one I think is very good, called "Somebody New"
http://community.livejournal.com/brokebackslash/209572.html

It's about Jack finally deciding to quit Ennis for good and leave Lureen to pursue his own life. Ennis hits rock bottom and makes up his mind to go after Jack and try to get him back. Ennis tries very hard to change, but does backslide a bit. Really, really good.

This one is I'm nuts about, called "Green Eyes", with an AWESOME OC named Bob White. Warning for extreme smuttiness!
http://community.livejournal.com/brokebackslash/?skip=60
{Scroll down the page and look for the entry entitled "Green Eyes".}

Both of theses are works in progress, with several chapters finished. Somebody New has 14 chaps so far, and Green Eyes 10. They are addictive!!

Oh snap, this is one of my favorites! I mentioned it in a thread awhile back. I am almost breathlessly awaiting the eleventh chapter. It is hot, hot, hot. I love how gothic this Bob White character is - drinking Absinth, waiting to get to Jack outside of Ennis' house, needing to be invited in like some creature of the night. Awesome!

Oh lawks...I love BBM fanfiction, but I'm sorely pleased I didn't continue reading "Green Eyes" based on this description. I started it, but now I'm glad I stopped when I did. The author is very good, I give you that, but I just couldn't continue reading this one...

Really, why did you stop? Too much smut, or is the whole Bob White thing too far fetched? There is a new installment, and I don't know if I like the way it is going. Ennis ends up cheating on Jack, which I find really uncharacteristic. I wish I knew more about the author.

I was put off from the start, really. You can get that feeling, you know, that you won't like a fic when you start reading it. I didn't even like the summary to start with.

Now that's one thing that bugs me, when it becomes a bit farfetched. Thank you for that comment; it solidifies my intuition not to read it.

I got thru about 7 or 8 chapters of this (Green Eyes) and just had enough. I didn't see Jack and Ennis's characters and their relationship being as developed as their sex life. And this Bob creaton, whoa, I didn't stay to find out if he was a vampire or a demon, but there was something sinister and demonic about his descriptions. On to brighter fan fics, this one will please the people who enjoy the dark stuff.

About Green Eyes, I have noticed a lot of talk about this story too, especially the warnings. But when the last chapter was posted I read it out of curiosity. I must say I am sorry I did. It made me physically ill, seriously. Green eyes manages to turn BBM into a tawdry soap opera, seriously distributing. If you are a BBM purist you may want to stay away. About the author, I am not a qualified judge of whether or not they are any good, but does that matter when you are repulsed by the story?

There are so many great stories out there, that Green Eyes was just too dark for me. It makes Jack and Ennis into something out of "Dark Shadows" how they can be manipulated so easily and against their true natures.

Human Interest and Two Crows Joy

I printed it out over the weekend, and read about 3 chapters last night. Too strange you should mention it.

Are you going to the BBM BBQ in August in Texas? I am trying to get jennasts from Dallas to go, she wrote Somebody New. I'd love to meet her and anyone else with the BBM passion. I know you are a regular here, and I think I've seen your posts on either Dave Cullen or BetterMost. Anyway, I'm going to the BBQ, something to look forward to.

Yes, Dreaming is by Catglith, I'm sure of it. This is strange, LOL! How do you like it? I'm kind of addicted, myself. Somebody New is also a favorite of mine. I just love FF. A lot of people think FF is hokey, but I really need to read about the boys being together.. I need that alternative universe!

I did hear about the BBQ, but won't be able to make it. I was just at a BBM event in the Castro in San Francisco last night. The Castro Theatre hosted a 3 day showing of the movie, which will last until tomorrow night. Brokies got together for a gathering before the screening last night to discuss the movie. I was unable to attend, but I did get to see the movie. I met a few Board regulars here, but missed a few others. It was good to see my all-time favorite movie on the big screen again. I only wish I could get off work to see it tonight and tomorrow, but I can't make it.

A BBQ sounds fun! There are details about it on Dave Cullen, right? Oh well, let me know how it goes. I'm sure it'll be the bomb! Brokies really know how to throw a party!

On a sadder note, today I read the last chapter of A Love Born From Steel.
It was another great fic. It had a happy ending, which gives me the strenght to keep reading. Had too much tragedy and sadness after the movie and story.

I just finished all current posts of Dreamin' and I must say, I love it. I love Cathalin's style of writing, and her dialogue is right on. She brings a lot of emotional touches to the characters, and writes some pretty hot sex scenes, but on the other hand, she writes some really sensitive and heartfelt sex scenes as well, full of emotion. Just couldn't praise her enough.

Some Silver Lining is also really good. LOTS of drama, twists and turns. At the end of the last chapter, my jaw actually dropped when I read the last couple of lines. Just a complete suprise, a welcome one. The characters in it are fully developed and really done well.

I'm really looking forward to the Dave Cullen BBQ. It's going to be one of the highligts of my summer. I wish Jenna Sinclair who wrote "Somebody New" would come, she is from Dallas, like me. I asked her, but I don't think she is going to make it. I know a lot of us fans would like to hug her neck for her great story.

You might want to read the prequel to Some Silver Lining before you read it. The prequel is called For A Little While. Same author, same site. It's good, but she really hasn't hit her stride until Some Silver Lining.

You people! Frankly, I used to cringe when fanfiction came up, thinking it was for "Star Wars" or "Buffy" geeks who had waaaay too much time on their hands and not enough "worthwhile" things to do. . . that they did it when they weren't playing RPGs. That was up until earlier this week when I read this thread and checked out a few of the links out of curiosity. Now, I'm hooked, and it's all y'all's fault! Thank you very much!

In the short time I've been reading BM fanfiction, I've read some good, some mediocre, and some bad. My absolute favorites are the two by maidenofthesea, "For a Little While" and "Some Silver Lining". That author is my new best friend, whether she likes it or not. I started reading "Human Interest" and am intrigued.

While I'm new to fanfiction, I'm not new to the internet or ignorant when it comes to navigating it, yet I am having trouble finding all of the chapters and some of the fiction mentioned in this thread. Everything is all spread out everywhere and kinda messily. I can't find hide nor hair of "Green Eyes," and I'm very curious to see for myself what that's all about. From all I can tell, it's not up anywhere anymore. What's up with that?

And I'm about to go crazy to find the final chapter of "For a Little While". Any advice you kids can give me would be appreciated.

And to lauragigs, who started this thread. First off, thank you. Second off, I don't know why, but your line about Ennis and Jack "marching in pride parades" *cracks* me up.

I know what you mean, now I'm obsessed with the fics instead of the movie! Oh well, ain't no reins on this one either.

Here is the address for the final chapter of "For a Little While" that you asked about. I hope I can get the link to work!

Aw, I get this way with everything I like. . . food, music, movies, TV, the internet, boys. I go all Tazmanian Devil, tearing around, until I get worn out and don't have the time or energy to enjoy what I've found. I'm trying to pace myself and have discipline, reading a little at a time but it's so against my nature.

Anyhow, thank you so much for the link. So sweet of you. I was *this* close to crawling into the internet myself to look for that last chapter. Google wasn't helping me a tall.

I actually did find the last chapter at a super cool site. . .

http://web.mac.com/luigi.adami/iWeb/FANFIC/home/home.html

It's got loads of stories, many mentioned here in this thread, and I like it's design and organization. Easy to manuever. It is graphics heavy though. And, swear to God, *everytime* I went to the last chapter of "For a Little While," something on the page made my browser crash. Stupid Windows '98!

You saved me, and I am ever so grateful. I *loved* the way it ended with the dog tags and stuff. I am turning into a swooning teenage girl over this stuff! But if I don't get some sleep and soon, I'm gonna look like an old hag. Good night, ever'body.

It's curious to me that the author removed it entirely. I mean, why not leave it up? At first I wondered if she took some negative feedback to heart and took down the story to shield it and herself from the nasties. That seems a little extreme but possible. Or maybe she knew she couldn't finish it soon and took it down to avoid being hounded by people asking when it was going to be finished. Or maybe she's a professional writer and the web publishing violated some contract or something.

It's funny, there was a big discussion over at live journal about this, she did get A LOT of negative feedback and a lot of people thought that that was why she had erased it, people got pretty heated, calling her a coward, saying she lost her readers trust... it was pretty ridiculous...

but her comment said that it wasn't the negative reviews, I think her direct quote was something like, "intriguing real life issues"... so i have no clue what exactly it is, but I believe her when she says it isn't the negative reviews. She wrote something like 12 chapters ignoring them, so I don't see why one more would have been a problem (she had said she only had one chapter left to write)

I get your point. It's like her husband beat her, cheated on her with her best friend, stole her money, trashed talked her all over town, and when she divorces him, people act like she did it because he the left the toilet seat up or somethin'.

Hmmmm. . . "intriguing real life issues". Sounds like she's either a drama queen or she has something sexy and dangerous going on! I want some intriguing real life issues instead of plain ole issues.

You're welcome friend.

Now you can read the sequel, Some Silver Lining! It's totally awesome. No joke. At one point in the story, my jaw dropped, it was such an unexpected twist. I know what you mean about getting some sleep, I read these before bed, and can't put them down. I'm usually up way past my bed time!

I have visited your linked website, it's now on my Favorites list, so I can just click on it and it pops up. Another really great story I found off of this site is called Dreaming. It's under the multi-parter icon, written by Cathalin I think. Wow, another mind blowing story. It's in my top five favorites. Check it out....

I totally agree with you beeplebrain. Dreamin is so expressive, and so well done, I was totally drawn into it. I stayed up late reading it coz I just couldn't put it down. Lead me to your door is so unique, totally different story line and takes place more recently. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Some Silver Lining had me on the edge of my chair this last chapter, I love the characters and their relationships. It's full of plot twists and show a strong Ennis, which I love.
All of these are on my favorite list.

It's true that fanfiction is not for everyone! That aside, I would say that there are a number of stories on various sites now that are of a very high standard. I have to say that there are some published works out there that are not as engaging or well written as some of the fanfiction around. It's incredible how well some writers have gotten into the skins of Jack and Ennis and made them their own (with all due credit to Annie Proux, of course!). I've really enjoyed seeing how the relationship between the two characters has developed in different ways, and the different personalities that have developed for them in the different stories. The medium of internet publishing has also made some very creative styles possible and I really liked "The Letter" http://community.livejournal.com/brokebackslash/?skip=40 which you obviously couldn't do in print.

I've also found the fanfic to be something of a remedy for the "brokeback fever" that has been mentioned elsewhere  I hope eventually to wean myself off BBM altogether

The author has said that she had some real life issues that caused her to have to delete all of the chapters of Green Eyes from her livejournal, so it isn't up anywhere anymore (unfortunately, I LOVED this fic...) She didn't elaborate on why, but she hinted that she hadn't given up writing it all together so hopefully it will show up again. I really hope so, she was only one chapter away from the end and i seriously am craving that last chapter!

Thank you for the response and for saving me the time and aggrivation of continuing to look for it. It's too bad that it's no longer available, cause I'm really curious. It seemed to be a love-it or hate-it type of thing, but even the hate-it types seemed to concede that it was well written.

It's curious to me that the author removed it entirely. I mean, why not leave it up? Aw, I could speculate till the cows come home, and it still won't be available anywhere. I've just got the fever for the flavor and want MORE! It's not like I don't have enough to read. I've found a whole lotta BBM fanfic, but I want this one, the one I can't have! Story of my life.

I wasn't sure I'd like it for Brokeback but I was getting down about the ending of the movie so I'm glad I could find some fanfic with better outcomes. What can I say, I need a happy ending sometimes. I've been reading fanfic like crazy. I don't usually read so much but everything I have found so far has been really good. Thanks to you all for the links!!

BBM has been my first serious foray into fanfic, too. I'm following most of the fanfic already linked (and jonesing for another chapter of "Somebody New" :) ). When I read fanfic, one of my criteria is based on something Joss Whedon said when he brought Buffy back to life on "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" after he killed her good and dead - that he could bring her back, but he'd have to work for it. That's the key to me - it can't just be "And then they woke up and it was all a bad dream, and none of it ever happened." The authors have to work to get the characters to a new place. That's what I like most about "Somebody New" - the author, jennasts, has worked her characters damned hard to get them where they are, and that's the way it has to be.

I like the ideas from some of the other fanfic that I'm following; taking a different fork in the road at some of the turning points along the journey, and exploring how that could have gone. But again, the authors have to *work* for it - it has to stay true to the characters and the world they live in.

If you do wean yourself off BBM, please let me know how you did it. I'm looking into methadone clincs as we speak.

I think you and I read the fanfiction for similar reasons. I love these characters and want more of them. I enjoy spending time with them and tagging along on more little adventures with them. And as much as it would change the original story, part of me wants a happy (or at least happier) ending. I mean, what's the harm? Besides, it an old show biz tradition for the long-suffering couple to walk off into the sunset together for a happily ever after. Carrie wound up with Mr. Big. Amanda wound up with Dr. Peter Burns. Ross wound up with Rachel. Harry wound up with Sally. I like Jack and Ennis more than all of them put together (especially that annoying Ross), so I figure those two dueces deserve just as good.

Now, come closer so I can whisper something to you. I don't think what I'm about to say will go over well with some people here (kellyjt looks around to make sure no one's eaves are dropping.). I'm actually getting a little tired of watching BBM. I mean, everytime I play the DVD, the story always ends up the same way! Gets tiresome. I have played it like little kids play their Disney videos. . . over and over and over. . . had it running for "company" as I puttered around the house and did chores and stuff. I'm sure my neighbors hear it playing and are like, "Oh, god, is he watching that *again*?" I guess the weariness was bound to kick in sooner or later. I should've known it was coming when I could say the dialogue along with the actors, including Ennis' grunts and throat clearings and "Huh"s.

I even took to watching the DVD extras, but a little bit of that goes a long way for me. Is there anything less entertaining than watching artists and especially actors in a mutual love fest? I'd rather watch Lureen punchin' numbers in her addin' machine, lookin' for extra zeros, her eyes gettin' smaller and smaller.

Besides, a silly part of me bucks when I see Jake or Heath. I'm like, they kinda look and talk like Jack and Ennis, but it ain't Jack and Ennis. It's like Jack and Ennis are acting like Jake and Heath. And I want Jack and Ennis. You know what I mean? I know that makes me crazy as hell, but whatever.

I agree with you that some of the fanfiction is as good or better than some published stuff. It's cool how the internet offers artists -- writers, musicians, etc. -- to get their work out there without the middlemen. Of course, there's more to swim through and thus more crap, but it's not like there ain't crap out there even with the middlemen. And this way, the comsumer is more likely to get *exactly* what (s)he was looking for.

Okay, time to balance my inner Lashawn with my inner Ennis and shut up.

LOL - I actually *work* with clients on a methadone programme! My approach to overcoming BBM fever is basically the same. In heroin addiction you replace the heroin with methadone, then reduce the amount until you can detox on what little is still left. With BBM I have replaced the film with fanfiction and am gradually reducing the amount of time spent on reading it. However, there is so much good stuff out there that I am struggling to reduce right now! It's always a good idea to replace less productive behaviour (i.e. obsessive reading of fanfic websites) with more productive behaviour (i.e. spending quality time with friends and family, working on thesis, going to the gym) but again, that has a level of commitment that I don't think I have. I guess it's just one day at a time...

Yeah, I forgot about that one. What a wonderful surprise it was. Even more wonderful is how "they pulled it off and that NBC didn't publicize it to death (An "ER" you *MUST* see or your life will be NULL and VOID!!!!!!). Check it out at
.

And what about Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert on "Different World"? I recently saw a cast reunion of that show done by Nick at Nite/TV Land, along with some clips from the show. Dwayne's busting in on Whitley's wedding to Byron and begging her to marry him instead (Baby, PLEEEEEEESE!") was so over the top, but it still gives me goosebumps and makes me misty. Check it out at
. The studio audience going crazy adds to the thrill, as does Diahann Carroll's protests. One thing I remember that's not in the linked scene is Carroll saying to Dwayne something like, "Just die!"

Reunited, and it feels so good. Happy times.

And I think I've seen three generations of Hathaway women. . . Jane, Carol, and Anne. They just keep getting prettier!

Oh, honey, I was once like you. But now, I'm eatin' that sh*t up, down, sideways, everywhich way but loose. The not-so-hot fanfiction that I've found so far is elaborations on the original story that don't add anything more to it than a bunch of words. I'm not going to mention any names because I don't figure I have the right to diss on somebody specific who's creating something (no matter how unoriginal, trite, or derivative), putting themselves out there for God and all the trolls to see, when I haven't done it myself.

The best I've found is alternate universe stuff. Yeah, some of it is kinda cheesy. Some lay on the cowboy talk a little too thick. And as much of a horndog as I am, I am sometimes so over the sex scenes. But there was one part of "For a Little While" by maidenofthesea that made me cry, it was so sweet and cathartic. And there are others where I'm *dying* to see what happens next. That hasn't happened to me since "Melrose Place". Well, actually, I was kinda that way with "Veronica Mars" this past year, but not really dying, just highly curious and impatient.

Did you ever read GRIT magazine back in the day? It had several serialized stories in it towards the back, usually very homey, sometimes western stories. Some of the fanfiction is like that, only bettah! They don't leave out the juicy parts.

In fact, I looked it up, and GRIT is still out there. Here's their fiction guidelines: "GRIT regularly publishes historical, mystery, Western and romance serials (up to 15,000 words in 3,000-word installments with cliff-hangers) and short fiction (1,500-3,500 words). Stories should emphasize the positive aspects of American life. Manuscripts accepted omit profanity, violence, sex, and alcohol and drug use." What? Are they Amish?

Now, back to you. Look at it this way. Would seeing a bad picture of your sweetheart make you stop loving them or love them less? Do you love a favorite song any less when some poor soul -- bless their hearts -- rips it to shreds on "American Idol" or at karaoke night? Did you love BBM any less when you first heard that horrendous disco version of "The Wings"? BBM is too good to ruin. It's like it's got teflon coating! Stuff don't stick to it.

Tell you what, don't read the fanfiction if you don't want to. Heaven knows there's other stuff to do, and I admit, part of me thinks I've lost what's left of my mind and given all the way into my inner geek, negating all the hard work I've done toward becoming a sex symbol/supermodel. It's kinda like screwing ugly men and riding Mopeds -- loads of fun until your friends see you doin' it.

However, if you're even a little game, give it a go. You can sit down by me. . . just don't make fun of me when you see my lips moving as I read.

Ooh, I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. I had to go out and get a new pocket protector. I got a blue one because it brings out my eyes (BLINK! BLINK!).

Hmmmm... Jack as a dog. . . I'm skeptical but intrigued. Does he hump Ennis's leg? If the story ends up like "Old Yeller" did (or "Cujo". . . take your pick), I don't know if I'll be able to stand it. Where did you find it? I don't see it in any of the gajillion links to BBM fanfic that I've saved.

I do like the title though; it's a fun play on words. Very clever. It makes me think of that old Olivia Newton-John song from that movie "Two of a Kind", "Strange Twist of Fate." Do you remember that one, or are you one of those people I hate. . . people younger than me? I've got that song on MP3 somewhere in this mess that some call an apartment.

Ooh, I gotta go. A pile of stuff just fell on top of my new pocket protector!

"I can't find hide nor hair of Green Eyes..." There are 2 other (better, IMO) short BBM fanfics by the same author (Neuontz) that have disappeared too.

"The best written I've read so far is called Human Interest ... and a follow-up called Two Crows Joy. The author does tend to go a bit overboard in integrating the big-city female reporter into the story ..."

Big-city female reporter? That seems like something that would ruin it! But several of you like it so I guess I should check it out?

"I'm sure there is a very poorly written one out there that is going to ruin this movie for me."

Vaporize, I've come across some poorly written ones, but thankfully they haven't been ruinous to the BBM experience (just watch the DVD again to wash the bad taste out...)

I'm really into a fic on LiveJournal called "Reunion" by BelgianBoy, Reunion is now up to 10 chapters.

I'm heartboken about "Green Eyes." It seems I'm not the only one - a few people on LiveJournal are looking for it.

This is the first one I read. I suggest you give it a try. It got me hooked. I traded my obsession with the movie to one with fan fics

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2759902/1/

It's called "Human Interest", and there are several posts here about how good it is.

My other favorites are
Lead Me To Your Door
Somebody New
Dreaming
For a Little While, and its sequel, Some Silver Lining.

It sounds like we're all reading and recommending the same fanfics here. I like most of them, but "A Better Idea" has some moments that I'm finding a little hard to take (Ennis picking flowers for Jack? PUH-leeze.) but mostly it's interesting.

I don't know anything at all about homosexual men, but do they really have sex three-four times a day, every day? I know this is fiction, but damn. How are these boys supposed to get anything done?

The link to "The Strange Fate of Twist":
http://community.livejournal.com/wranglers/1016688.html#cutid1

I didn't think I would like it because the premise sounds so silly, but it works in its own, weird way.

(No need to hate me - I remember ONJ from before "Grease" even.)

I just saw your reply today, about seven months after you posted it. That's pretty timely for me! Anyhow. . .

It seems like a lot of BbM fanfic has things about them that I could critique. I like to think that I'm not so nitpicky that I can't look past it. I don't think I'm that way. When I think back to what I've read, I vaguely remember the stuff I didn't like but can remember specifics of what that I did like, if not love.

I haven't read "A Better Idea" yet, so I don't really know the context of Ennis picking flowers for Jack. With my first thought, I agree with you, that it is hard to take, but my second thought is that it is sweet and charming.

What bothers me most about it is the idea that the author could be portraying Ennis as the "man" in the relationship and Jack as the "woman". That's an easy thing to do with homosexual couples. Even I do it sometimes.

I guess it flies against my perception of Jack and Ennis as different but equal. We only saw one sex scene between them, so who's to say that Ennis was always the top, the pitcher? I saw them both behaving with each other in ways that are stereotypically male (protecting, providing, strong, and stoic) or female (emotional, nurturing). To me, they were a perfect match, a good team, because one seemed to fill the other's varying gaps. Does that make sense? It's, like, how they both could be either camp tender or shepherd.

Blah, blah, blah. As for your quesiton on gay men. . . Yes, they -- in fact, most healthy men -- can have sex multiple times a day -- if they are on crystal meth. But seriously, I know that under the right conditions (not talking rare, complicated stuff like planets aligning or even with the help of any drugs, legal or not), a lot of men can go at it a few times a day.

If Jack and Ennis are on one of their little fishing trips, the only thing they really have to do is provide for themselves and their horses and their camp. After that, they can do whatever they want. Alma did figure out that they weren't doing a whole lot of fishing. Even on a regular day, if there's enough time and not too much stress, not too many distractions, it can happen too. Yeah, men are pretty good that way.

Thanks for the link to "Strange Twist of Fate." I'll check it out.

And I don't hate you, especially since we are similar in remembering ONJ before "Grease." My older siblings had her greatest hits 8-track, and I remember listening to it as a kid in my dad's Monte Carlo. I still have "Have You Never Been Mellow" on 45. I'm so old! Did you see her recently on "American Idol"? She looks great.

There is no such thing as good fan fiction, especially where a linear story with a solid, complete ending is concerned. It's an attempt by untalented people to make the work of another writer their own.

Actually, some of it is very well written. Yes, fan fiction is based on someone else's work, but many of the writers have a very nice grasp of prose and the structure of fiction writing. Many of the writers are talented enough to write something other than fan fiction. In many cases, it isn't "the attempt of untalented people to make the work of another writer their own", but people who were very effected by a story/movie and who want to pay tribute to the original writer, not steal their work. If you don't like fan fiction, that's fine, but maybe try reading some before judging it. I have a degree in creative writing, and I swore that I would never read fan fiction until I became obsessed with Brokeback Mountain. But lately I've found some very talented people writing fan fic.

kevin, I started a thread on another message board regarding whether fanfic was a cheat or not. The gist of the discussion is that authors have been borrowing from each other for a long time now, and the heart of the matter is how good the writing is, not where the author got it from (as long as the original source is properly credited). That's good enough for me.

There is no such thing as good fan fiction

Oh, no, darlin', you're thinking about Big Foot. But seriously, you aren't entirely wrong. There is some crap out there.

The bad totally doesn't get the characters or their personalities and patterns or even the basic feel or theme of the original. . . or is self-indulgant, sometimes masturbatory, fantasies that just don't appeal to me. That stuff is so wrong and so off the mark, I can blow or laugh it off.

The worst is really bad retreads or needless expansions on things from the original story, totally not getting that part of the beauty of the story is Proulx's (and Lee's) tight, concise way of telling it. . . giving *every* *little* *frickin'* detail and S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G out everything -- obvious or not -- but basically going around in circles and adding nothing worthwhile. . . treating speculation or assumptions or misconceptions as fact.

Now, that stuff chaps my a$$ and can threaten to taint the original for me. It's not necessarily easy, but I can blow or groan it off. I mean, I've weathered some stupid stuff on the various BBM boards (like "Crash" being a better film. . . as IF!), so what's a little terrible fanfic? At least the writers have a love and appreciation for the story and characters, and they are trying.

Even the best can't hold a candle to the original -- which stands on its own, head and shoulders above even some of the best literature -- and can have parts that make me groan or cringe or roll my eyes. BUT. . . . . . .

The decent and the downright good are a lot of fun. I've posted it here before, but I enjoy having further adventures with these characters and seeing them in different situations. I like 'em and want to spend more time with 'em. It's fun to fantasize about what coulda/shoulda/woulda been. And I get a kick when I read fanfic where the author pretty much nails how a character would react or speak in a situation. I like it when Jack doesn't die and there is still hope. It's kinda like fantasy sports leagues. No real harm in it.

But don't get me started on those homemade videos where people sync BBM clips to lush love songs. If you're not the one, then why does my soul feel glad todaaaaaaaay!? It's incongruous. . . like putting chocolate syrup on mashed potatoes. No, their songs have fiddles, not violins. . . steel guitars, not horns. . . twang, not Celine or Mariah twittering.

The Cuddle Fix site kinda freaks me out what with all the music and such. It's so busy! I love the pictures however. There's a lot of them on there that I haven't seen before. Go ahead and laugh at me, but I've been using BBM pix as my desktop decore since December. It's always nice to get a fresh, new foto to spruce up the old PC. I mean, this is the new millenium -- computers serve as fashion statements just as much as functional machines anymore. In fact, some Saturdays, when I'm feeling lazy, I put up a new pic as my desktop and just relax. When someone asks me what I did over the weekend, I tell 'em I redecorated!

I'll check out your work soon(ish), P Angie P. I'm amazed at how much BBM fanfic there is out there. Actually, I'm more like overwhelmed. I can't really keep up with it all. . . all the serialized stories. . . all of the authors whose work I like or don't like. Shoot, I can't even keep up with my favorite posters on this board. You all look pretty much the same from where I'm sitting. You're all *gorgeous*! Well, except for the nasty ones who say BBM is boring and not so special and that "Kazaam" should have won awards over BBM and that Jack and Ennis were straight, just friends with bennies, and now they're really straight. . . to hell and Jack is gonna have to pump up all the flat tires on the bus that takes 'em there. I am *SO* sure! Those posters probably look like Mama from "Throw Mama from the Train." But I digress. . .

You crazy people have actually inspired me to try my hand at this fanfic thingie. I mean, apparently all the cool kids are doing it. I've gotten about 15 chapters outlined, and I've written (and rewritten and rewritten and rewritten again and again then some more) the first chapter, but I'm still not happy with it. I fear I'm doing everything I criticized in an earlier post in this thread. I guess hypocrisy is part of my essence.

Would one of you kind (and gorgeous) peoples point me towards something somewhere that would get me started on learning how to post any work I do deem worthy of sticking out there for all the world to see? I'm so confused! I'll probably have to get drunk to have the courage to do it, but then I'd probably get drunk regardless! Much obliged to anyone who can advise this lost lamb. Stay sweet!

The most popular forum for this seems to be LiveJournal. It's pretty self-explanatory, and totally free. From my standpoint as a reader though, it can be tough to navigate (but I'm relatively new at it).

You can do this on any blog site, too. (Google, Yahoo, MySpace, etc. offer these.) Just treat each chapter like a seperate (consecutive) blog entry.

BBM was the reason I discovered fanfic. Like many others, I couldn't leave the story and the film. It kept spilling out. So..the fanfic I have found compelling and well written is
Human Interest and the sequel Two Crows Joy
Somebody New
and a new one (to me at least) If I Asked.

Have read lots of other stuff which was ok but those three I think are well written. Too much of the BBM fanfic centres around E and J having sex. Stirring in context but dull without.

Just my humble opinion.

Ailuro,
Why don't you start with this short one, it's called "The Wind Rivers", and tells about a week of Jack and Ennis on one of their camping trips, most likely the one just before Ennis and Alma divorce. It's the only one that I've read multiple times, and it still gives me chills, and even a tear or two. I really like it.

Having been introduced to fanfic and not really been inspired (I prefer the ones which could actually happen), I found this one excellent because, as the author says, it's a very likely situation between the two of them.

There is one change in the story you'll probably notice, though, but I think it really works.

I read this one a long time ago, and liked it enough to print it out and keep it. I think you'd like the one I recommended above, called "The Wind Rivers". It takes place during one of the weeks they spend camping together, very true to the original, and certainly believable. Check it out.

I've found a few more that I've found worth reading (I also want a story about the love between our boys, and how things could have been different if there were different paths taken, not just screwing all the time). "Lead Me To Your Door" by Marakeshsparrow is fantastic - it is an AU where Jack and Ennis didn't meet when they were 19, and Jack discovered the story by Annie Proulx in his fifties. I've been loving it.

Just gotta put in a recommendation for "Human Interest" and its sequel, "Two Crows Joy" - everyone is addicted to them over at Livejournal. The story is incredibly moving, funny and real. The characters are endearing. And the writing is far, far better than you'd expect of fanfiction. You'll be really surprised by it.

I just re-read For A Little While, and forgot how much the boys had sex in that one. And there is one called Cabin Fever, where they are having sex on three out of five pages. Those aren't the kinds of fics I like. MadLori of Human Interest and Two Crows Joy hints at the sex, but there is a story there. Conficts, relationships, drama, real meat, not just slash. Her style doesn't need to go into so much detail in the sex scenes. I'll tell you what though, a beautifully written sex author is royandronnie. She has a couple of stories, Never Enough Sleep, and The Time Between. The way she writes the sex scenes is ethereal and poetic. Here is a quote I really like from Never Enough Sleep:
He still had Jack’s hands pinned over his head, but in truth they surrendered to each other, as they always did. Ennis didn’t hurry, he didn’t like to be rushed ever, and his free hand found Jack’s face, cradled it, as his tongue met Jack’s quicksilver eagerness with deliberate, passionate earnestness, dart met with thrust, quick taste met with a slow licking of the open lips as his thumb slid under the bottom lip. The only sounds were of harsh breathing and half-muffled cries of protest and desire, Jack moaning and whimpering, Ennis growling and purring in his deeper voice as the mouths and bodies slid together in the ancient dance.
Whoooweee! She's got such a gift with words....

I think someone above stated that fan fiction was a 'teenage obession,' okay well, I am twenty five and I write fan fiction. I don't see it as 'junk' or 'useless' or anything like that... I work hard on them. I am a English major and a writer/poet. I use fan fiction as writing exercise. It is good practice when you use characters (already established) and flesh them out - take them into new scenerios...

I like the challenge of it. That is just my opinon... but good fan fiction is hard to do and something I take pride in.

<<I am a English major and a writer/poet.>>

I am a recent convert to fanfic. I left it alone for the longest time. I thought nothing could add to original.. I didn't want to "ruin" the experience. I was an English major too, and I'm a writer. And I was a snob, I now realize.

Then someone sent me a link to one of Belgianboy's stories, and holy s hit. I spazzed, I cried, I was on a total euphoric high. Yes, I could criticize, but what's the point? If a story can do that to you, what more do you want? It is powerful.. it is real. And it is quality. I do think I was lucky to read Belgianboy first. He's a talented and skillful writer.. I respond to the 'heart' - the depiction of emotion (and sensation) - but he has the skill to support the content, which makes it very, very good.

Ladywilde, I take it your name is a reference to Oscar? I love Oscar Wilde, he is one of my great heroes. When I was first spazzing over Belgianboy, I was a little embarrassed (my friends were looking at me funny), but then suddenly I had the thought: Oscar would've loved this. And that made it okay.

<<I hope I did not come off to much like an a-hole in my original post. >>

I don't think you did at all.

Oscar really gave us some great words to live by, didn't he? When I'm feeling broke I always remember 'Luxuries are necessities; necessities are luxuries'. So many times it sounds like he was joking, but I don't think he was.

I would, I would!! oh wait, maybe I have it already (I never remember titles). But if it's under another name, no I don't! I need it!

Oh, littlewing, maybe I really do need to get a life. Or a date, anyway. As if anyone could measure up...

Lol, don't worry about it, Malina. This is no different than my mom rooting for the Raiders - never missing a football, baseball, basketball game (she even watches golf and tennis matches). Her sports obsession trumps my BBM fetish any day!

<<He still had Jack’s hands pinned over his head, but in truth they surrendered to each other, as they always did. >>>

Malina-5, I enjoy your posts alot. here is a link for a FanFiction I really like entitled simply "Ennnis". It's a good read, but long. I printed it out because I dislike reading off a PC screen, but that's just me. I found this story really very satisfying, and it's how I like to think what happened for Ennis after Jack. The ending had quite an impact on me, but don't jump to the end and spoil it for yourself!!!

I sent you a PM too

retropian - that ending - the bit about the you-know-whats - I'm just not sure! It's powerful, anyway - I think I like the ending - I'm just not sure! I liked the story, though. I would also like to think that's what happens for Ennis. The thing I always think of is that he was only 39 when Jack died. That's not old. He'd have time for a whole other life.

btw, I just love the 'free hugs'. I keep passing it on to people who I think need to see it. It's great. It's like getting a hug.

Oh, for anyone else who's curious, it's OT but here's the link:

It's on the 'return of ClancyPants' thread too.

Hi Malina.

I was stunned by that ending, by what Ennis did with the "you know what's".
I liked it because it symbolized his emotional growth and commitment to a new love. He'd been carrying his heartache all that time, and has been emotionally stalled because of it. Now someone has wakened him to new possiblilites and he lets go of the past, not forgetting, not eliminating his love for Jack, but moving forward instead of hanging on to the past. He free's himself and takes a chance on love. Yah! for Ennis!

I'm glad you liked the "hugs" video.

I totally get that, and I agree. I love that he moved forward. Still, when he did the thing with the you-know-whats, part of me went NOOOO, not the you-know-whats! I find it challenging. I think that's very funny and interesting.

I would like to recommend a fic I just discovered titled "Tainted Evidence," and I have provided a link to the Lowermanhattan Community over at Live Journal. I'm sure the author won't mind. Keep in mind that this story is a total departure from the usual E&J fic, and some would say totally out of character. I'm not even half way through the fic, but I'm impressed. Tainted Evidence reads like a novel, and although it is not true to canon (at least so far) it is really drawing me in. I won't go into detail in case you guys decide to check it out, but in Tainted Evidence, Ennis is a New York City homocide detective and Jack is a NYC Public defender. You can find Tainted Evidence here:

I would love to know what you guys think of this fic!
