Yeah, I kind of got that they might be calling an asterisk a star. But do regular people normally call it a "star"? I know they've taken to calling a period a "dot" and an ampersand an "at sign," and those seem reasonable. As for "brace," that was my guess too, but as you suggest, regular people usually call them brackets.
