I don't think red herrings that totally form a legit category should be allowed. If four words go together they go together, whether or not they were what the puzzle designer had in mind.

But to be fair, most often, the potential red herrings only constitute three items.

I didn't fall for the bean thing, because I saw "kiddie" first, and immediately thought of 'kiddie pool' and found the other pools.

however, I couldn't figure out the other items.  I got them all by guessing.
