I am enjoying Ellery's sarcastic eloquence and it's always interesting to hear, what to people who eventually get together felt during their first meeting.
Being a detective Ellery know how to interpret people, I wonder how long it takes for him to feel the strong attraction towards the stranger who doesn't smile.
Like it - very much so, thank you

The first time round I assumed that Ellery had formed an attraction pretty early on and that is why he decided to take Ennis around with him. But Ellery's interior dialogue isn't explicit about this as a motivation.

This is true but maybe he hadn't realised himself at that point. I can't remember which chapter it was but I do remember Ellery telling Ennis that when he said "... it wasn’t that long ago, if ya don’t mind", the tone that he used really got Ellery going.
I'm looking forward to some more of the Deputy's inner thoughts.
The ones back at his house should prove interesting *fans self*

Yes I referred to that in my comment on Louise's LJ. Ellery later told Ennis that when he shut down the conversation about Jack's death he heard a growl in his voice which went right through him.

I thought something similar Jo, but agree with you, his interior dialogue doesn't exactly reveal this. I think it's part of what we know about Ellery already - he presents a very confident, smooth exterior, but the interior is far more complicated. And I think we're seeing that in his early impressions of Ennis - it wasn't all so clear-cut and straight forward as we may have expected...
(my thoughts on the matter, at least)
