There are some great cat stories here - poignant, sad, funny - thank you for starting this thread, Artiste.
It's amazing how much pets contribute to our quality of life. They're certainly a luxury and can cost a lot to take care of; I think we tend to take that for granted.
I have a zillion kitty stories about my two (Titania & Oberon, brother and sister, who just turned 10 years old on 3/15).
Here's one:
I came home from work very late one night 11:30 pm or so and found Titania and Oberon milling about in the kitchen. My brother (Billy) was staying with my Mom and was already in bed.
I put away my case and the other assorted stuff I drag with me to work every day, but the kitties keep nudging me, meowing, trying to get my attention, and generally milling about. It occurred to me that something wasn't right because they're usually asleep in Mom's bed.
(When I moved back home from Boston, Mom gave me what-for for bringing cats with me, then proceeded to shamelessly adopt them as her grand-kitties being as I was never going to provide her with any real grandchildren
).
I quickly go back to Mom's room to check on her. She wasn't in bed where she belonged; she'd gotten up to go to the bathroom - the bed alarm had come unattached, which is why Billy didn't wake when she tried to get up alone - and was passed out in there on the toilet with what turned out to be a minor stroke.
If I could just teach the kitties to dial 911...
