I got the banana thing. Just didn't know that slugs had anything to do with bananas.

But to be fair, most often, the potential red herrings only constitute three items.

Yes, and in that case I can accept them. Sometimes in that situation I find myself grasping at red-herring straws that clearly aren't a perfect fit: they're related to the other herrings but are an adjective instead of a noun or whatever, which I've come to recognize as red flags (red herring flags).
