Gay-marriage bill faces make-or-break vote in N.J. Senate

TRENTON -- New Jersey lawmakers are expecting a dramatic day here as the state's long debate about allowing gay couples to marry hits the floor of the state Senate this afternoon.

Thousands of supporters and opponents of the bill are expected to clog the Statehouse and protest outside on a cold day with wind chills in the mid-20s.

Pro-gay marriage advocates have an uphill fight to get the 21 votes needed for passage in the upper house , as only 13 senators have publicly supported the bill.

That has prompted both sides to stage a feverish fight to sway lawmakers to their side. Opponents predict it will be defeated, and supporters contend it still has a chance.
