"Y" is The Yellow Ticket
« Reply #2580 on: January 17, 2008, 04:20:39 pm »

IMDb:  This was the third film in which Lionel Barrymore and Karloff met. This was a big step for Karloff to be appearing with Barrymore, who was a super star in those days along with Laurence Olivier. This film takes place in Russia, in the year 1913, Mary Kalish(Elissa Landi) is a Jewish girl, and finds out that her father is dying in a St. Petersburg prison. During this period, Jews were not able to travel without passports and she has to get a "yellow ticket", which is given to prostitutes. Having arrived at the prison, she learns her father has already passed away. She meets and falls in love with Julian Rolfe (Laurence Olivier), a British newspaperman. Karloff played the role of an alcholic orderly for Lionel Barrymore who attempts to molest Landi in a park. This film story line resembles the Opera "Tosca". This was a good start for Karloff's great career in films.

Re: ABCs at the Movies: MEGA COUNTDOWN
« Reply #2581 on: January 17, 2008, 11:18:42 pm »
So let's just skip Z for 1931 because....there are no Z movies worth playing!

Instead, let's get to the next round. Or shall we say, multiple rounds because it is the

MEGA COUNTDOWN!

I am playing an A movie, from 2008. Then we count down (B from 2007, C from 2006, and so on)...

three rounds of the alphabet, ending at Round 1930!

Wildcard X: Any year, any movie

Check the archive for unplayed movies. As soon as I add Round 1931, it will be totally up to date.

Add the year on movies you play.

I think that does it, folks. Have fun!

"A" is Australia (2008)

I really want this movie to be good. I need a great blockbuster romance...it has been a few years. I was heartened when I found this description today:

December 24th, 2007: Luhrmann's film is set in northern Australia prior to World War II and centers on an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Hugh Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

What to Expect: Australia has always been a place of opportunities and second chances for many British subjects. Its great natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes and wide open space have captured the hearts of millions through the last few centuries. Unfortunately, it has always been overshadowed by Britain's other little colonial project, America. Consequently, Australia has been nothing more than a footnote in both history and popular culture to the chagrin of Australia's proud people. Now these very same people and their government are making a conscious effort to spotlight Australia on the international stage. That effort is probably best exemplified in film by one of Australia's best known directors, Baz Luhrmann. Baz has brought together many of the country's best known actors and a tremendous budget exceeding one hundred million dollars to create an epic movie that captures the beauty and the heart of Australia. The director and the cast were all driven by their shared love and pride of their country to create a timeless epic that will capture the imagination of all that see it.

Next up, B from 2007

One of the few 2007 films on my list that I've yet to see!  Maybe this weekend.  But there's also Juno, Sweeney Todd, Persopolis and I just read that Cloverfield , which opens tomorrow, got a fresh rating at RT...

A short film directed by Randy Eisenberg about going to the beach on the cheap. If you want to watch it, it is on YouTube.

Edited to add: I just watched. 10:22 minutes of silliness. Some nice scenes of the boardwalk at the Pines (no views of the ocean though!) and a couple of cute guys. Fun!

Whereas I loved the psychological horror of Silence of the Lambs, I found this one, well, disgusting.
