"W" is White Lightning (1973)
« Reply #6142 on: October 04, 2010, 10:21:12 pm »

From an IMDb user review:  "White Lightning" is a terrific action/drama that tells the story of a hard-driving moonshiner named Gator McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) who is released from prison early in exchange for any help he can give the government with its case against his fellow moonshiners. Gator, however, has his own agenda and it has nothing to do with his altruistic nature. It seems that Sheriff J.C. Connors (Ned Beatty) of Bogen County is not only one of the biggest moonshiners in Arkansas, he's also responsible for killing Gator's brother. And Gator wants revenge.

"Y" is YellowBrickRoad (2010)
« Reply #6144 on: October 05, 2010, 04:36:08 pm »

IMDb:
One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No One knows why. A search party dispatched by the U.S. Army eventually discovered the remains of nearly 300 of Friar's evacuees. Many had frozen to death. Others were cruelly and mysteriously slaughtered. The bodies of the remaining citizens are still unaccounted for. Over the years, a quiet cover-up operation managed to weave the story of Friar into the stuff of legends and backwoods fairy tales. The town has slowly repopulated, but the vast wilderness is mostly untracked, with the northern-most stretches off limits to local hunters and loggers. In 2008, the coordinates for the "YELLOWBRICKROAD" trail head were declassified. The first official expedition into a dark and twisted wilderness will attempt to solve the mystery of the lost citizens of Friar...and reach the end of the trail.

Oooh, scary!

Wildcard "Z" is Green Eggs and Hamlet (1995)

From the producers:
This feature length twisted creation is based on Shakespeare's tragedy of almost the same name, but the annoying iambic pentameter has been replaced by a more accessible Dr. Seuss style rhyme. Of course, to capture the plot twists the good Dr.'s story as well, we added a new character, SamIamlet, who interacts with the brooding Prince in many ways I am sure you can imagine. There's drama, suspense, conspiracy, and even a healthy dose of innuendo (thanks to the Bard).

The One Degree of Separation Round!

Each movie played must have something similar to the previous movie (one degree of separation). What they share is up to you. A character? Director? Location? When you play the movie, please highlight what is shared with its predecessor.

Unplayed movies, as always.

PS...Whoever goes first, playing the "A" movie, gets to play anything they want.

"A" is Ace In The Hole (1951)
« Reply #6147 on: October 13, 2010, 05:47:44 pm »

"Ace in the Hole" was the original title and it was changed to "The Big Carnival."

IMDB: Charles Tatum, a down-on-his-luck reporter, takes a job with a small New Mexico newspaper. The job is pretty boring until he finds a man trapped in a mine. He jumps at the chance to make a name for himself by taking over and prolonging the rescue effort, and feeding stories to major newspapers. He creates a national media sensation and milks it for all it is worth.

Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

Good one, memento!  Don't forget the Bolivian miner (#4).

Edit:  Oh, and look what I just found:

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/13/finding-traces-of-cinema-in-a-real-life-rescue/?scp=2&sq=kirk%20douglas&st=cse

Kirk Douglas starred as a former big-time New York City newspaper reporter in possibly the greatest man-stuck-in-hole-while-media-watches movie of all time, Billy Wilder’s “Ace in the Hole,” which came out in 1951. On Wednesday, like many of us, he watched as Chilean miners emerged from the earth one by one. City Room gave him a call and asked if it brought back memories.
Includes a short video with A.O. Scott discussing the film.

Edit:  I'm on a roll!
