I can remember my mother only a bit.
Mostly she was gone, working,
And one day she just didn't come home.

What I can remember is her teaching me
To be safe, to be silent,
To keep my eyes open.

I imagined when I was little she forgot,
And fell into some trap
I wanted to help her get out.

Now I am a mother,
And I teach my daughter to be careful.
But this generation will be different.

The trap is sprung,
She will walk out of it,
And I will walk behind her.

                        Cooking is an artful thing.
It takes many years to learn.
                        The best ingredients are
                        Which you should always yearn.
You go to the green grocer.
You go to the farmers stand.
You can grow your own vegetables,
If best is what you desire
                         Have a skillfully prepared fire.
The cuisine thats best to help you fill.
                         The freshest if you will?
A good fresh choice to try,
                         is uncle hanks road kill.

This must be some kind of a cruel joke,
I knew that my Mistress was very broke..
But the thought that she put me up for sale
Is enough to make me want to wince and wail.
I was there for her, through the good and bad;
this stupid sale sign just makes me so very mad.
I have been the perfect pet...loving and good.
This is how I'm repaid... Man's best friend my foot!

Bubble, bubble, toil & trouble
make it vanish, on the double
we cast this spell, wishing good will
through the forrest, over the hill
sending peace throughout the land
goodness coming from our hand
flying to them like a white dove
sent by the goddess from up above
harmony and peace on earth
life should be full of comfort and mirth
let only happiness succeed
as we live out our wiccan reede
this is our one commandment, which we strive to fullfill
"if it harms no one, then do what you will"

I am not very superstitious at all,
but in winter, summer, spring or fall,
whenever I drive by a cemetery,
I hold my breath till I've gone past..

Not because of the old belief
that if you don't you'd suffer some grief
or become possessed or even die.
I'm afraid that is not my reason...

I do it out of respect for those who rest
six feet under the earth with a coffin for a nest;
I hold my breath to quietly greet those who
breathe no more.. if only for a few moments..

On a walk today
I passed a corner shoe store
that had these boots in the window!
Red cowboy boots?!
You know
I had to have THOSE!

A Butterfly is fragile, its wings so finely made.
I love to watch them visit, flowers, throughout
                                         the sunshine or the shade.
They fly and flit around the space,
                                         leaving beauty in their wake.
It is only a beauty you should see.
Not yours to snag or take.
So when you see a butterfly.
                                         Marvel how its made,
but leave it be.   To flutterbye,
                                         among the leaf and glade.

The leaves shine in shades of red and gold.
'Tis breathtaking ...quite the sight to behold.
The sound of water rushing over rocks
plays like enchanted music to my ears..

Many a time, I have sat alone on this riverbed,
and sensed that all my stresses had slowly fled.
Every rock or leaf or drop of water in this place
oozes a peace I yearn to own through and through...

Teeth and fangs, and eyes that see in the night..
How many years do you remember?  On your lengthy flights.
Are you lonely, or are you glad.  You've seen a thousand fates.
Time goes by and still you wait.  It means naught to you.
Do you still pine for a love once known?  Or is that all forgot.
I wonder how you ever feel?   That you continue, here.
Things, and people come and go, but is it ever real.?
Do you ever wish;  that you felt, the way we feel?

my computer

"what?" they say, "you got a
computer?"

it's like I have sold out to
the enemy.

I had no idea so many
people were prejudiced
against
computers.

even two editors have
written me letters about
the computer.

one disparaged the
computer in a mild and
superior way.
the other seemed
genuinely
pissed.

I am aware that a
computer can't create
a poem.
but neither can a
typewriter.

yet, still, once or
twice a week
I hear:
"what?
you have a
computer?
you?"

yes, I do
and I sit up here
almost every
night,
sometimes with
beer or
wine,
sometimes
without
and I work the
computer.
the damn thing
even corrects
my spelling.

and the poems
come flying
out,
better than
ever.

I have no
idea what causes
all this
computer
prejudice.

me?
I want to go
the next step
beyond the
computer.
I'm sure it's
there.

and when I get
it,
they'll say,
"hey, you hear,
Chinaski got a
space-biter!"

"what?"

"yes, it's true!"

"I can't believe
it!"

and I'll also have
some beer or
some wine
or maybe nothing
at all
and I'll be
85 years old
driving it home
to
you and me
and to the little girl
who lost her
sheep.
or her
computer.
