I personally think the author is so confused.He can,t seem to come down on one side or the other.Perhaps that's his problem in real life.
I can see no ambiguity in the scene with Mrs Twist,I don't think religion comes into it all.She loved her son,period and is glad to have some link with him via Ennis.There needs to be no words,they both understand each other.
The observations he makes about the differences between the glorious scenery etc of the fishing trips versus family life confuse me.Does he not get that is exactly the point,there is meant to a significant contrast.Trapped against free etc etc.
He also seems to have missed the point re the straight males.We are not meant tp particularly like them.They wee me of a type and time.Again to provide the contrast with Jack and Eniis and also to show us the struggle,the 2 have against such stereotypes.

Final words,not overly impressed with the article or authors perception
