David's "What Is It?" For September **** ANSWER POSTED!! ****
« on: September 06, 2008, 02:47:52 am »
What do you think it is? :D

Releasing the lock mechanism and turning the dial loosens the rope and allows the two pieces of wood to separate approximately six to eight inches. This item was patented in 1877 and it is 12 inches long.

The winner or winners will receive a lamb from Ennis and Jack straight off Brokeback Mountain! ;) :D

I will post the answer and announce the winners later this week or early next week.

what the hell is a transom?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term transom may refer to:

Transom (architectural), the horizontal lintel or beam across a window, dividing it into stages or heights. In the U.S. it also can refer to a fixed window over a door or another window

Transom (nautical), in naval architecture, is the surface that forms the stern of a vessel

And now I learned something, b/c I never knew there was a nautical definition, too.   :)

Hi Kelda!

The transom Marie just described would be the one also mentioned in the poll. They are often found in older homes here in North America. The transom will be opened to help let any built up heat escape from the room and it also helps to circulate the air just a bit. :)

Hi Marie!!

I've heard the back of a boat referred to as a "transom" before. I heard it called that in Jaws. Remember when they shot the shark with those spears attached to ropes and barrels? They ended up tying the ropes to the clips located at the back of the boat. Suddenly the shark began swimming against the boat creating huge waves and turbulence. Quint (the captain) told Matt and Chief Brody to cut the ropes loose or else the shark "will pull out the transom". But that is the only time I can ever remember hearing it said when referring to the back of a boat or ship. :D
