This item is roughly 7 1/2 inches tall, made of metal with a front glass panel, and cranks or knobs on each side.

Jess, just to be fair, double check your choice. It doesn't say it is used BY trolley drivers, but rather a device used AT trolley STATIONS. In other words, this device would allow the PASSENGERS to check route info. I just thought I should make certain you are clear about that! :-*

It could be all of those answers........

Ive gone for the directional thing at a rest station for motorists.......

Now, if one of those was put up anywhere in a public place today, it would probably last five minutes, but in the "olden days" there were no vandals, so it would have remained intact.

That is very true Sue! Such devices would have been safely installed outside (or inside a motorist arcade) with little worry of vandalism. :)
