Yes, I did start a new story.

Completely unpredictably.

I hope you enjoy the newness!

:D  I knew I went to bed too early last night!  But what a great surprise to find this morning and, yes, I enjoyed the "newness" very much!  Colson in California .... the mind boggles - but in a good way! LOL!  And I like the idea of a trial run and I especially like the idea that Colson and Ellery are alone on this trip (I love Wes and Edna, but .... honeymoons are for two, you know?)

“Streakin? What’s that?”

“Runnin around bare-ass.”

Colson snorted. “No chance a that. An you better not a brought them obscene cut off shorts a yours neither.”

LOL!  Of course he did Colson.  You may be headed for California, but you'll get to see all the way to France!  ;D

Terrific start, as always, Louise!  You never lose your touch.  Thanks!

Marie

I'm wide awake, Louise!   :D

Colson's feeling of triumph after his first plane ride is adorable!   And now they're going to hit the San Diego gay bars?  This I have to see!  It's certainly been a year of "firsts" for him, hasn't it?  LOL!

And you know I'm thrilled that we'll be seeing Jeremy and Nick! The twins teaching him to ride is something else I can't way to see!  Oh, the possibilities..  Of course, he'll be very sore after his first lesson and Jeremy, being the Sweet Thing he is, will need to give him a good rub down ........  ;D

Thanks, Louise!

you don't think I'd start a new story and not have our favorite people in it, did you?

And I decided that I have had enough of a rest from getting fancy that we might just find some fanciness in this story, and a few pratfalls and other assorted amusements as well.  I also need a break from heavy crime plots!

Great start Louise. Just what I needed while I am on vacation!

One small edit: in chapter 1, it should be Brown Horse Farm not Wes Horse Farm.

got it.

I am a bit preoccupied right now trying to vacate my home and camping out at my office, but I'll be back on track as soon as my temper simmers.  I wrote it up in my blog.  Sorry for the distraction, folks!  Life is like that!

SPOILERS

I don't know which I love more - a wet, naked and horny Ellery or a nervous, blushing and horny Mr. Coyote!   :)  I'll take them both.

“We’re ... all set. Know how ta turn down the bed an all that.”

LOL!  Can't argue with that. Terrific dialogue, as always, Louise, and having Colson in California is inspired!

Thanks,
Marie

Yeah, I love it! Although when I first read the title, I thought they were heading out east. LOL. I didn't know about 'the land of the lotus eaters'.

And what's a Tesla coil?  ???

I love Ellery giving Wes a call before they take off. I remember Ellery being shocked when Colson told him about Wes and Edna regarding him a their son, but he enjoys a bit of daddying now and again, even though he'll probably never admit it. It's nice to see Ellery seeking a bit of reassurance from Wes.

And Wes, well, what can I say? I love Wes!!

“Have fun boy. Just don’t gimme the details.”

How wonderful that Wes and Edna have invited Nick and Jeremy to do the sunday roast. I'm already looking forward to both of them riding with the Grey girls.  ;D

hmmm, I hear you Marie. It's an impossible choice.  :P

here is a Tesla coil, invented of course by Nikola Tesla:

It generates static electricity.  LOTS of static electricity.

Aw, poor Colson ....  but I love the hair combing idea, of course  :) .  And Ellery does know how to handle his man.

Actually, I've been in hotels where I have .... err... heard quite clearly the activies going on in the next room (but don't tell Colson that!   ;)   )

“If I’m wrong, then what?”

“Then I’m on top next time.”

Looks like Colson can't lose!

Thanks, Louise

http://louisev.livejournal.com/276955.html

SPOILERS

Well, I'm glad Mr. Coyote didn't stay away too long!   ;D  After all they've been through recently, they really need this time away.

All Ellery had to worry about was himself and Colson.

And that's more than enough!  Their new friend David sure is insistent, isn't he?  LOL!   I think it's time to put out the "Do Not Disturb" sign along with that deadbolt!  Thanks, Louise!

Bonus chapter!

http://louisev.livejournal.com/277063.html

SPOILERS

What a great surprise, Louise!  And we got to peek in on Jeremy and Nick, too, which I always appreciate.  We knew Nick had family issues, but it sounds like maybe something has happened recently? Nick was very defensive/sensitive, even more so than usual.  Or maybe it's just the idea of having to step into Ellery's world where he feels very insecure.

Nice that the girls invited them to dinner - and we can always count on the Grey girls to embarrass each other and give us a good laugh!

Thanks for the bonus!

oh that's what those girls are good for - that awkward adolescent timing that always makes for lots of drama!

I decided that what it was I was woolgathering about was that I didn't want to get involved in another high stakes plot involving everybody and everything with mysterious plot twists and turns, but just a pretty much straight narrative for a while.

So far, so good!

Yep, I think that's it. The fact that he still goes on about Jeremy's supposed crush on Ellery is telling enough. Nice of Jeremy to not go into it.

But I love the fact that even Nick couldn't say no to Edna's chili recipe.

I wonder why Pam calls her dad 'Colson' and not dad(dy)?

So far, so good!

You can say that again.

Thanks Louise.  :)

chapter 7 is up!

http://louisev.livejournal.com/277334.html

SPOILERS

"You said you didn’t want ta know the details. He is a passionate an skillful lover an pleasured me with virtuoso skill."

   Well, that'll teach, Wes.  If you don't want to know, don't ask!  And I'm also glad that Ellery pointed out that not everyone wants to spend Sunday afternoon with their boss and his wife  - even if they are a lovely couple like Wes and Edna.

Louise, taking the boys out of Greenlea County is such a great idea.  Poor Colson, having spent his entire life in Arizona, visiting Calfornia for the first time is a bit of a baptism by fire.  And they haven't even hit the gay bars yet!  I'm really enjoying this, Louise. Thanks!

I am glad you're liking it.  I think you can see already that Ellery, now not constrained by the propriety of his position as a police officer, nor by the social conventions that keep him from being gay in the world at large, has every intention of dragging Colson out of the closet with him, if only for the duration of their vacation, and it is not going to be easy.

Love when you're on a roll, Louise!

SPOILERS

I remember when Nick first showed up he made a remark to Jeremy about the word "queer" still being used in Tourmaline so I thought that was an interesting conversation and a good point to bring up.

I had to laugh at Colson asking about "transvestals" but the fact that they've traveled all the way to California only to enounter another shrieking "Wayne" is absolutely hilarious!   Not sure it'll do much to improve Colson's mood though.... it might make him feel more at home, but not in a good way!  LOL!  Great stuff, Louise.  Thanks.

yes, a sort of a roll.  I am still ramping back up again.

I took a bit of a vacay, as they say, and read a whole lot of books, about, um, 20 of them, in the past month or so, maybe more... I am a voracious reader when I am in the mood or out of the writing mode, and I finished the last in the final series I had been reading, last night about 9 p.m.  And I've got nothing to read on the horizon.  However, I do have some ideas on how the plot is going to go with 'Lotus Eaters' and I think it is fair to warn you that 'No characters will be harmed in the course of this plot!'  None of the ones we love and cherish, that is.

heheheheh.

SPOILERS

“You shut up, you are just jealous they complimented my cornbread so much!”

Louise, you have the sister bickering down pat!  And these two do have an uncanny knack for showing up at doorways at precisely the right wrong time!

The Jeremy-Nick banter is priceless.  "Mercurial" is the perfect word for Nick and I love that he's unapologetic for it and I love even more how Jeremy is so matter-of-fact and direct - he knows just how to handle his naughty boy, and I think he secretly likes that Nick keeps him on his toes, not to mention other positions ......  ;)

if you knew how many fights I had with my many sisters... you would not be surprised.  it consists mostly of "Shut up!" and "Would not!" "Would too!"

Now if only Colson could find his vacation attitude! I have a feeling that another Wayne won't help much in that department.

I'm really enjoying this Louise. It's fun to read.

Chapter 10!

http://louisev.livejournal.com/278162.html

SPOILERS

Don’t you gay homosexuals all go for that stuff?”

As opposed to the straight homosexuals, right?  LOL!

“Only got em ta dance one time.”

What did I miss?  Did they dance sometime while I wasn't looking?

But, oh my.  Colson is so tense and having a tipsy Ellery to deal with in public isn't helping to relax him any and now he's smoking again!  Good thing they had some getting fancy time earlier....

More great stuff, Louise - thanks!

I always wondered what Ellery would be like if he was truly away from his job, all of his responsibilities, and his normal inhibiting social factors!

SPOILERS

I feel for Colson - this is a lot for him to take in at once .... but I do understand Ellery's desire to throw caution to the wind and just be FREE for a change.  And I think in the long run this will be good for Colson, too - I hope!

“I ain’t takin my clothes off,” Colson warned once more.

“Ya don’t have to.”

Hmmm... well, I guess that remains to be seen!     Thanks, Louise.

SPOILERS

Wow - that is some changeup you pitched at us, Louise.  You do like to keep us on our toes!  The banter between Wes and Jeremy was terrific, and it shows that they've reached a comfortable level of familiarity with each other, with Jeremy telling Wes maybe he shouldn't be phoning Ellery so much and pointing out how messy his office is, and with Wes growling at him to get out of his office.  LOL!  I especially liked Wes's references to "constitutional weaknesses" - he does know his boys, especially Ellery!

Good grief, Sevigny is claiming he pled guilty under duress?  Sigh.  That's all Ellery needs.  I hope he got some good relaxation time in at the beach .....  Thanks, Louise.  :)

I did a whole lot of thinking about the plot here and ... fact is, if there isn't any police or lawyer work in it, it just wouldn't be normal! But this takes a bit of a different tack than the plots we have seen in the past.    At least I hope it does.

I like to envision Wes's sheriff's office looking pretty much like a paperwork pit, and all of his subordinates have their own lesser sinkhole pits of paperwork, with the notable exception of Reynolds, whose desk is clean as a whistle and whose reports are always filed on time.  But the real question is -- where is Amos Marigold's arrest report???

Well, that must've been some darn good thought and contemplation, Louise, b/c that was just lovely!

...and with an unusual energy, Ellery struck away from shore, swimming in long, easy strokes. Without hesitation this time, Colson followed.

Now, that's a beautiful image! And a year ago, who'd have ever thunk it?   :)  Thanks!

It would seem that, when it comes to imagining those boys and their life together, a little contemplation of the passage of time seems to get the right tone in there!  Which is what I am trying to do.  Take my time and let the plot unfold in a more naturally-flowing manner.  Sometimes in a more action-oriented plot it is easy to keep up action sequences but then the nuances are lost, and this is a story about nuances.

Wow - you snuck another one in while I was typing!

Why do I get the feeling Jeremy is going to find out about this before Wes wants him to?  Now I'm trying to think back to when Jeremy and Ellery questioned Sevigny ..... and I'm dreading the moment when Wes has to tell Ellery (and I'm sure Wes is, too!).   :-\  Never a dull moment in Greenlea County (or California either)!  Thanks, Louise!

yes I did sneak another one in there!  And yes, I am sure Wes is dreading ruining Ellery's vacation.  However, I promised myself, and you faithful audience, that this was going to NOT be a police procedural with coitus interruptus and all that it entails!  that our boys really ARE going to get a vacation they have been craving since the end of 'Long Way Home', without the interruptions of deathbed confessions, attempted murders and AIDS scares! So, Ellery and Colson have one coming to them.

Woo Wee - you've been typity typing, Louise!  :D

SPOILERS

I always love Colson's ruminations and it makes a lot of sense that their day at the public beach and their upcoming visit to yet another gay bar in the strange new, open world of California would harken back memories of Adam and his days and years spent in hiding.   Beautifully done.

Mansex? Uh, yeah, I'd say so.  Holy crap.

How about we just crossed the Rubicon?” Colson asked, grinning happily.

LOL!  You can say that again, Colson.   I'm sure glad they ignored that blinking light on the phone ....

Thanks, Louise!!

I figured that follow-up would go over well with all of you skittish readers who are afraid that events in Tourmaline are about to intrude into the halcyon vacation time of Ellery and Colson!  AFter all, how many times did I ruin their time alone with one misfortune after another?

Marie

Sorry I haven't put up any new chapters as yet, I spent some time this week going to Obama campaign events and today I had to work.  I am winding down now and digesting my dinner. I might have something up tonight but definitely tomorrow.

I mean,  :o  :-\, someone spying on them?

Things are never easy for them are they? Poor Colson, after having taking such a big step at the beach, now this...

I loved Ellery 'being all official'. After having found out about the Sevigny lawsuit, this was all he needed.

Thanks Louise, can't wait to find out who the spy is.

SPOILERS  Chapters 18 and 19

Holy shit, Louise!

I loved Ellery 'being all official'.

Yeah, me too!  Especially when he's officially kicking someone's ass! LOL!  I really can't blame Colson for having a paranoid knot in his stomach - the idea of someone hiding in a closet in your hotel room, for whatever reason, is disconcerting to say the least.  I'd feel terrible if Colson's belt buckle was stolen, but I do hope it comes down to theft or attempted theft and not something else .....and Colson still hasn't found out about Sevigny!  :-\

No telling what will happen next!  Thanks, Louise!

Well, if not being able to eat is Colson's only reaction to what's been going on, I'd say, he's doing great.

you scoundrel! I should post those chapters earlier!

now this week is going to be a little crazy until I hit the road Saturday morning.  My trip will bring me in the opposite direction, first to Lincoln, NE, then second stop in Rawlins, WY once more (that great showplace of Wyoming!), third stop in Reno.  I expect to have internet in all of those places and hope to get a little writing done on the road.

I did not get a chance to post a chapter, but I am updating my blog.  I am through with the first leg of my 4 day Escape from Impending Winter, on my way back to California, and I have been thinking about the next chapter.  I posted a teaser in my blog!

okey doke!

At last, a chapter 20!!!  I took a nap when I arrived in Rawlins, WY, and I still feel a bit rubbery, but I have logged 1000 miles in two days!  Holy cow!  And eaten more tacos than I want to count!

Holy cow is right!  Hope it was a good nap - and now I'm in the mood for mexican food!

So funny how Colson kept changing his mind about getting fancy - but the trip does seem to be doing him a lot of good despite all the interruptions and mishaps.  No matter where they go, the telephone does seem to be their bane.  I love how he told Ellery he wasn't ashamed and that he actually offered to go to the club!  Way to go, Colson!   :)

Thanks, Louise!

He is starting to feel that strange liberation that comes from being far away from the familiar and daring to do things he would never do otherwise.  A step at a time.  Which of course was what Ellery was hoping would happen!!!

Sevigny's father has a lot of money and that can be dangerous, since he won't mind wasting it just to cause trouble, and his lawyer won't mind dragging things out just to keep billing him.....

Funny that Edna's going to get a microwave out of this whole mess!  LOL!

"Yer turned on by that,” Ellery accused once more.

“No I ain’t.”

  Uh oh.  Well, that pesky 20% is bound to pop up every now and then, but looking on the bright side, I do recall that the last time it happened Colson was bound and determined to prove himself to Ellery, so .......

Thanks, Louise!

Right! Maybe Colson shouldn't get liquored up too fast right?  ;) I wonder what Colson is going to tell Wes and Edna about this trip. Not too much I think, poor Edna might have another 'vaseline' moment.

And a thin waiter in an apron with a pout....for a second there, I thought his name was going to be Gene!  ;D

Thanks Louise. Can't wait to find out what song Colson and Ellery are going to dance to. Whenever they finally make it to the dance floor.

Aw, poor Colson, not knowing how to dance and dying of embarrassment.  But he did it!  And the image of the "Saturday Night Fever" dance after he's had a few is too funny!

"Yer different. Let’s go.”

Yes, Ellery is definitely one of a kind!  LOL!  This is a trip Colson will never forget!   ;D

Going to the nudist beach, dancing to 'Saturday Night Fever', I wonder what Ellery's got planned next for their holiday. I sure hope it will last a bit longer before they have to get back to real life.

And Colson is soooo adorable when he's embarassed.

„I just want ta eat you up when you blush so pretty,” Ellery said, leaning close to Colson’s ear.

Awwww, so sweet!

Thanks Louise.  :)

I had to do a lot of thinking before I posted that chapter... it's a delicate balance between Colson's desire to please his man and his social discomfort.  But things will surely never be the same!

I think you definitely hit the right note Louise. I don't think Colson will be hitting the dance floor any time soon back home. But when you're on holiday and you've had a few drinks, things happen!

I'm very happy for them.  :)

Holy moly!!!!!

...a challenging smirk on his face.

Ellery knows what to expect when he gives that look, but Colson managed to surprise him, too, didn't he?  LOL!  And I'm sure Ellery, with his superior detective skills, will have no problem finding what he's looking for - but I'm wondering if he'll get Colson to accompany him on his shopping trip?   Great stuff, Louise!

Well, Paula sure managed to keep a cool head with that Thyssen character. He was insulting her a as a woman AND as a professional lawyer and she still kept it as civil as possible. Go Paula!

Gawd, the crap women had to take (and still have to take I guess) from imbeciles like that man! Grrrr

I agree, Fabienne.  She handled the situation beautifully.  "Insufferable blowhard"  is the nicest thing I could say about him.  >:(   I'm glad Wes was so appreciative and I hope Ellery and Colson express their own appreciation when they return (although I hope that's not sooner than planned!).  Thanks, Louise!

At last at last...

Chapter 25:

“Mr. Coyote always gets me good, boy,”  Ellery said, winking.  “Almost forgot what life was like before I got me my own personal coyote.”

'A colson shower'?      Love it!

And 'I've got to go see a man about a horse'? I love Oblivious Colson.

And, oh my, Ellery is being a bad boy, and it seems like it's working.  ;D Although I think Ellery was using 'let's make Colson a bit jealous' as a distraction from the intruder case. And Colson went for it. Good for him them.

Great banter between them Louise. Thanks.  :)

well I'm sure glad somebody's reading still!  I have been slow about producing those chapters of late, unlike the Old Louise (TM).

Interestingly enough, I have been taking a look at the discussions going on in other parts of the fandom about the now wholesale trend toward stories featuring Dom/Sub relationships between Jack and Ennis, which at the time I wrote the first chapters that bring my dominant Ennis (now Colson) into the open plot, there was a terrible hue and cry about how out of character and disrespectful the entire concept of a dominant Ennis was to the fandom, which is part of what fueled that infamous era in fandom history known as the "Laramie Wars."  Now, of course - dom/sub alternate-universe fanfics are all the rage, but the debate still goes on about the "type of character" that would be likely to be a submissive.

Now, I never intended to make the relationship between Colson and Ellery to be a full-blown BDSM roleplaying lifestyle type relationship.  For one thing, that was never the point of their relationship.  However, I did incorporate into Ellery's character, as a dominant, even arrogant, controlling personality the submissive streak that manifests in his sexual tastes, which I believe provides an interesting contrast and makes him a more interesting character, as well as the source of some comedy relief, such as Colson leaving Ellery tied to the bed when he answers the door.  There is also no real secret about what triggered off the submissive side in Ellery - his early experience of falling in love with the boorish Bruce Eagleton, Jr, which imprinted him with a taste for submitting to a demanding sexual dominant.

However, I think it is fair to say that outside the bedroom (and even sometimes IN the bedroom) there is nothing passive or submissive about Ellery the rest of the time, and in fact his role in the relationship in general is one of assuming the upper hand more often than not.  What do the rest of you think?

I think I agree completely!  :)  I've never understood why many people believe that the "submissive streak that manifests itself in sexual tastes" as you so eloquently put it, is a sign of "weakness" in a person.   :-\   That's never made any sense to me.  And I also don't believe you can necessarily tell what kind of sexual tastes a person has just by viewing their public persona.

Now, as for Chapter 25....

SPOILERS

Yeah, I liked the "Colson shower" line, too!  And Ellery is incorrigible, isn't he?     This was a great example of Ellery "assuming the upper hand" in classic Ellery style!  Great stuff, Louise.  Thanks!

Ellery is being his incorrigible best, considering he has a limited amount of crime to deal with.  But what crime he DOES have, he is certainly taking over the investigation now!

And I'm glad he is perceived as just as ornery and pushy as I portray him, because that is the whole point of Ellery's personality!

I have to admit that I'm looking forward to Ellery meeting with the detective.  We'll be seeing some more "classic" Ellery, I'm sure!  Thanks, Louise!

Well, I'd like to give these to Paula. Are the Tourmaline residents listening?  :)

She really deserves them. I know she only doing her job, but the courteous and professional way she's doing it deserves very high praise. Go Paula!!

Thanks Louise. I'm glad Paula put Jeremy's mind to rest. Now maybe Jeremy can forget all about it and spend some quality time with Nicky?  ::)

(I'm not hinting of course, nah, I'm really not  ;))

Yep, that was classic, Ellery, for sure! I hate to see Colson distressed, but I have to admit it was great to see the Chief Deputy in action!  It'll be interesting to see where this leads.... thanks, Louise!

Nothing to forgive, Louise.  They wouldn't be the real Ellery and Colson if trouble didn't follow them, or if the phone didn't keep interrupting them, no matter how far from home they are!

Poor, sweet, earnest Jeremy!  He was so worried.

Tell Wes hi an don’t call me neither.”

I'd like to hear that conversation!  LOL!  And this should also be an interesting night at Rich's....

Thanks!

I'm happy for Paula, but maybe I'm being presumptuous.   :-\

I think I have a better idea of what I was struggling with in this chapter.  I was trying to determine just how much Colson would "let go" and what circumstances would facilitate that letting go, and how that would manifest itself.  It is easy to write about an unchanging character with predictable behavior, and I had some of the same dilemmas in previous situations where Colson would go back and forth about his commitment to Ellery and grappling with being "outed" sometimes a little and sometimes all at once.  One of the guidelines I use for this is the transformation scene from BBM in which Ennis drives up to Lightning Flat and admits to Jack's parents that he was very close to him, effectively outing himself to people who were very close to Jack.

I took that as a sort of guideline that there are situations in which my character would take sudden huge leaps regardless of how much it exposed him because he was in for all or nothing, and would even overcome his own paranoia about his sexuality given the right circumstances.  This is his first real complete separation from "homelike" surroundings after establishing himself in Tourmaline (the trip up north notwithstanding) and so this is the time, if it is ever going to happen, for him to make whatever further strides he is going to make into coming out of the closet.

But it is not easy writing to do.

No, I imagine not.  But luckily for us, you never shy away from the hard stuff.  And it makes complete sense to me that being so far away from home and in such a different atmosphere would be a strong impetus for "letting go."  It's been wonderful to watch Colson's realistic (at times poignant, at times funny) evolution.

Thanks,
Marie

You know, Louise, when I read this the very first paragraph of this story magnum opus ( :D) came to mind:

As Colson Grey approached the door, putting a deliberate hand on the knob as though gentling a horse about to buck, he stopped, his posture stiffening to an even harder stance, and he took a barely heard breath before he stepped inside.

I really like the 'deliberate' hand in this sentence. In spite of the harder stance and the breath he had to take, he stepped inside anyway. He did it, he let go.
And when Ellery pushes him to go a bit further (okay, the nude beach was A LOT further LOL), he might still harden his stance, but he knows he has to and wants to step inside again. That's a brave thing to do.

You've dealt with this change beautifully Louise.  :)

Yes, and Colson's not the only one who's consistent in his character:

“Now this looks like a very nice cut a meat, don’t it?”

And his exchanges with Sean the waiter and Hollis Grey were vintage Ellery!

I'm sure he won't be feeling "peaked" for long.....

Great stuff.  Thanks, Louise!

http://louisev.livejournal.com/284082.html

SPOILERS

Well, I guess I can stop racking my brain wondering who will be Paula's new love interest! LOL.  As usual, you're full of surprises, Louise.  You're not kidding about "new developments."  What an interesting character Henry Caulfield is - criminal psychologist, rancher, writer.

But, oh my..... I can't wait to see Ellery's reaction to the idea of being "sorted out" by a psychologist!

And, of course, Wes's timing with the phone call is as perfect, as always - thank god for voicemail.     Looking forward to more!

Thanks,
Marie

muah hahahahah yes, Wes always does know when to call!  And are you saying you see a chicken caesar salad in Paula's future?

Damn, (or 'goddamn it all to hell', as Ellery would say  ;D), two new chapters, and I need to leave for work....

AAAARRRGGGHHHH

Looking forward to my lunch break.  :)

NEVAH!!!

 :)  :)

Lunch was excellent btw. I was in good company of course, with Colson and Ellery, Joe and Wes.

I was eating my sandwiches at my computer. They were tasty, but I had a sudden craving for a chicken cesar salade...

And Henry Caulfield huh? He sure sounds interesting. But I have a feeling that Ellery won't share that opinion. LOL Talk about 'throwing a bat in the chicken pen', as we say over here.

Thanks Louise!  :)

that's a great saying! bat into a chicken pen.

No, I don't think Ellery is going to be too thrilled.

Oh, that is a great saying, Fabienne!  And so perfectly apt.  Can you picture Ellery meekly reclining on a psychologist's couch so he can be "sorted out"?  Ha!  Wes is going to have to pull rank and then some!

For those who think you are the only remaining small population of readers of the Greenlea Tales, I just thought I should tell you about what happened the past couple of days.

After long consideration and observing that the BBM fandom is suffering from friends-locked fics, unfinished fics, vanished and abandoned fics, and a decrease in new authors, it might be worth letting people outside Bettermost know that this series exists in an eye-popping 13 story series, 12 of which are complete.  As a result of my posting links, there are now at least 10 people who have started or tried out reading "Greenlea Tales", and at least 5 who are marathon-reading.  There were over 500 hits on TC Reader's site yesterday as a result.  I do not know whether that means new folks will be making comments on the stories.  After all, most of you know what it's like to read 100 livejournal pages and you aren't going to slow down to make a comment rather than go to the next page!  In addition, it looks like there are approximately 50 regular readers who are up to date reading "In the Land of the Lotus Eaters."  Not bad for an "aging fandom."

Great news, Louise.  I'm glad to hear that there are more people enjoying your stories.

And, ahh, yes, the days of marathon reading ..... I remember them well - and fondly!  :)

“That include you?” Ellery shot back, defensive.

Ha!  Nice try, Ellery!  But it looks like Wes has all his bases covered.

“Time for a little harsher interrogation I’d say,” Ellery said, smiling grimly now.

Uh oh.  Ellery is smiling grimly.  I wouldn't want to be David the towel boy.  LOL.

Thanks, Louise!

“No controllin who ya love. I was in love with a thief once. A thief who stole from me.”

I really like the way Ellery handled David - tough and no nonsense, but he showed some compassion, too.  And I think the fact that Ellery was honest enough to admit that he hasn't always been the best judge of character himself will make it easier for David to admit his part.

And Colson is irresistible when he's shy and scared.   :)

Both Sheriff Wes and Dr. Caulfield were so impressive with their talks.  Obviously, Wes understands his staff and Henry has a firm grasp, not only on what his job will entail, but on the discomfort many of them may feel in speaking with him.

“Not shy about stating his opinions.”

LOL.  Yeah, you could say that!

It'll be interesting to see Henry and Ellery interact, but right now I'm more interested in seeing how Henry and Paula size each other up on their first impressions!

And what's this about the Paso Fino?

Thanks, Louise!

Due to some problems with an online stalker (no, not here on Bettermost) I have had to increase the security on my Livejournal for the time being.  If there is anyone that is not on my Friends list who can no longer see my Livejournal, please just PM me and request Friends list access.

Yikes!  Dr. Caulfield is one smart cookie.  His meeting with Ellery is looking more interesting by the minute!  And I wonder what direction the conversation will take now that Henry has accepted Paula's offer of coffee....

Hmmm, I think Paula will share that opinion after this talk.

I'm a bit miffed at dr. Caulfield's easy assumption that Paula 'was predisposed towards him in some way'. Maybe the doctor needs some psychology too?

That's exactly what I'm eating.  My entire diet has been onion soup and chicken and rice soup, with homemade gluten free bread dipped in it.  I am getting better but I still feel distinctly non-normal!  I may do some writing later if I can get up the strength!

after more than a week of virus, coughing and noseblowing and exhaustion, getting notice on my job ending, and getting kicked out of my house (!) I'm settled into a new place and with some nudging from the readers, I'm donig some rereading and preparing the next chapter of "Lotus Eaters."  Things should be settled down and quieter now, so I'll be carrying on with my relatively normal pace of updates.  See my blog for the blow-by-blow of Louise's Very Unlucky Week.

Aha.  Sean the waiter.  No wonder he seemed "put out" with Colson and Ellery when he was waiting on them.  LOL.

Ellery has been at his best in dealing with David - tough, direct and unrelenting, yet compassionate and fair.  Wes would be proud of "his boy."   :)  Great job!

Thanks, Louise!

Happy Saturday everyone!

Here is chapter 39!

http://louisev.livejournal.com/285918.html

Why, thank you, Louise.  Happy Saturday to you, too.   :)

SPOILERS

What an excellent chapter.  The conversation between Mel and Paula rang so true, with both of them choosing their words so carefully.  I understand Paula's indignation and I really like Mel's measured response to her questions and concerns.  He's right that Paula does have to find her own way in dealing with Ellery and others in law enforcement and I think she's come a long way in that regard.

I am sure Caulfield is good at what he does, but I don’t know if he’s ever run into a true old-fashioned lawman before.

And certainly not one like Ellery, who is one of a kind!  I don't know whether to be looking forward to the meeting between Dr. Caulfield and Ellery or dreading it!  Probably a little of both - but, in any case, it won't be dull!

Thanks!
Marie

Yes thanks Louise, nice to see a Saturday update  :).

And Paula deserved to hear every word Mel said to her. Go Mel!

I agree Marie that the meeting between Caulfield and Ellery will be fireworks.  ;D

stay tuned, Ellery fans. I'm working on another chapter.

Leslie talked me into making it a Twofer Saturday, since you all have been so very very patient!
“Mr. Coyote always gets me good, boy,”  Ellery said, winking.  “Almost forgot what life was like before I got me my own personal coyote.”

Louise, it looks like you repeated the link for Chapter 39.  Here's the one for Chapter 40:

Once again, Ellery was really at his best here, and it reinforces what Mel told Paula about Ellery's personality being his weapon.  Always a treat to see Ellery in action.

Woo Hoo.  Look's like Colson has been inspired, too!   Thanks!

Whoops - thanks for catching that mistake, Marie!

I have been toying with the idea of getting into the next case with our new psychologist and his investigation of the Sevigny case and call it "The Lawman" - but that's just a fancy of a Saturday afternoon.  I think I need more plot than that!

SPOILERS

To Ellery’s surprise, Colson let out a choked noise that sounded like a sob, and his shoulders trembled beneath Ellery’s chest.

Like Ellery, I wasn't expecting that and I think that's what made it even more moving and powerful. That Colson was honest about his feelings and didn't keep them hidden says so much about his growth.  That was beautifully written, Louise!  Thank you.

Marie

P.S.  I hope Colson kicks the cigarettes again once they get back home!   :-\

You know, one of the reasons why I am keeping to this gradual schedule is that it gives me time to consider the organic growth of the relationship between Ellery and Colson.  Unlike the action-packed plots of many of the earlier stories, this story is about Ellery and Colson themselves, when they actually have time to relate to one another every day, for several hours a day, and it has a different texture to it.  With the time to think about each scene between writing them, I am getting a lot more of the deeper texture of their relationship that I would not be able to get if I were writing a chapter a day after work. In that respect it is much "easier" to write action that it is to write the psychological relationship between them, and at this point, Colson is just unwinding enough to start experiencing new things and telling Ellery how he feels.  Even though the phone does still ring, it is not the same time of pressure cooker they had been living in for so many months in Tourmaline.

As for the cigarettes... time will tell!

needless to say, if you've been following my blog, old man Winter and his cousin Influenza came to visit (again) and I am just now starting to get some semblance of a night's sleep again after several days.  I haven't had the concentration or the energy to do any writing at all - mostly the concentration, since I'm downing narcotic cough syrup that makes me very fuzzy.  I am hoping I can resume the story - well, by this next weekend!

Well, this was a welcome Sunday afternoon surprise, Louise!

SPOILERS

Now, his fury had vanished, leaving behind it only the passion and a kind of pride. I’m proud of being with a sexy man that I want. I’m proud that I want him.

Yes, this rings so true to me.  I can see how getting out of the "pressure cooker" that you referred to would have this very effect on Colson.

The clothes were tailored to fit the size as snugly as possible, stretching smoothly over his hips and shoulders. ..

Oh, my.  Now that would be a sight.  No wonder Colson had a little trouble breathing there!   ;D

“Well Jesus H. Christ,” Ellery replied, flabbergasted. “Now what am I gonna do when the other Colson comes back?” To his surprise, Colson chuckled.

“Put em on a plane ta San Diego, I suppose.”

     This was great, Louise - thanks!

As you might tell, I have been mulling over the circumstances of Colson's "coming out" and how it would look, and how it would feel to him.  I think it had to involve a few factors: one ways a perceived loss of privacy from having his family intrude on him, to make him more protective of his relationship.  Another is an environment where he could have a sense of anonymity, which did not settle on him all at once but gradually, to allow him to experiment with crossing boundaries he had not tried before.  And his expressing his frustration about competing for Ellery's attention is also part of that - being more aware of his own needs, and not just his sexual needs but his social needs.  And I knew that without some sort of perceived break from his immediate familiar surroundings, and some frustration thrown on top of it, he wasn't going to test those boundaries beyond Ellery's bedroom.

awww, thanks!!!  Of all the stories I've written, I have spent more time during this one thinking about Colson and Ellery's relationship with one another, and their attitudes and feelings, and how they have evolved.  This story I feel as though I sent into slow motion - as vacations sometimes seem - in order to bring a close up focus to the two of them.

Home sweet home!  Even though I'm anxious to see Jeremy and Nick, I'm glad Ellery passed on Sunday dinner this time.  I think they need to ease into their re-entry to real life. not get thrown in head-first!  LOL.  Time enough to deal with the girls after the weekend - they live in town now, after all.    This was a wonderful tale, Louise, and an important one in showing the growth of their relationship.

Will Ellery be meeting Dr. Caulfield soon?

Thanks!

I am not quite sure what to do with the next story.  I had a daring idea while I was dreaming the other night which I am still ruminating over.  It always helps me if I stop and think before plunging into the next thing!
