I look at the ToC first and scan it for writers I like. I go to their articles first, and generally read them, especially if the subjects are promising. My second choice would be articles with writers I haven't heard of but whose titles are intriguing in some way.

If I tried to read it start to finish, especially the entertainment listings and Talk of the Town, I'd rarely get past, maybe, Shouts & Murmurs. I still read TotT editorials but generally skip over the short features.

If none of the stand-alone features is appealing, I'm most likely to find things I'm interested in in "The Critics" section, especially the "Books" pieces. Not because I want to find good new books, which I generally do in newspapers or other magazines or social media, but because I want to read the articles themselves, which are usually essays on the subject of the book, sometimes but not always including multiple writers on the subject (if I were the authors, my thrill of being featured might be slightly diminished by writers other than myself publishing essays about my subject).

I usually don't read the ToC.

I always do, to see if there are any articles by authors I particularly like, such as Jill Lepore and Adam Gopnik. I tend to read their articles first.

I miss the old days when they included lists of what was playing where, especially what was playing on Broadway. It helped to keep me current.  :)

I heartily recommend "Deadline Extension" in the December 2 issue.

I liked the Dec. 2 article about the bears of Lake Tahoe.

I slogged my way through the Alice Munro article in the Dec. 30, 2024 & Jan. 6,2025 issue. It's very long, it deals with the sexual abuse of her daughter committed by her (Alice's) partner, and I really don't recommend it.

But the funny thing is, reading it got me thinking about my own TNY reading habits. I always read Munro's short stories, so maybe through the years I've read more short fiction in the magazine than I realized.  ???

Incidentally, I enjoyed Patricia Marx's Shouts & Murmurs. I read that because I always read Patricia Marx.

I'm reading "Love and Theft" in the latest issue about an author in the romantasy genre stealing another's plot and characters. It's interesting but it's very long and I don't know if I'll be able to finish it. Surprising how big the genre is. The stolen manuscript was the start of a six-volume series that has sold more than 3 1/2 million copies worldwide. Big money is involved. I'm also surprised that the article could appear while the litigation is ongoing. The thieving author's name is Tracy Wolff. Is this Wolf Day?

Is that in the Jan. 13 issue? My copy hasn't arrived yet.

Yes, it's the new issue. I don't know why but I usually receive it on Tuesdays. Meanwhile, the Full Wolf Moon will be on Monday. Wolf spottings continue!
