Some Getting to Know You Questions

  Barb!  Have you ever shared your SuperBowl ritual anywhere here on the Bean Site?  THAT story is better than mine!  I know now I'll always think of you on that day  .

I'm sure I haven't - never had a good segue to it before. 

It all comes from my being more of an athletic supporter than my husband.  He's the athlete - I just like watching them on TV.  (American) Football was always my favorite sport to watch, and the New York Football Giants were always my favorite team.  I just picked them when I was a kid to be different from my brothers, who were Buffalo Bills fanatics.  When Ed and I were first married and living in Ohio, the Giants were playing the Chicago Bears (DA BEARS) in the NFC Championship, which determines which NFC team will go to the Super Bowl.  We were having our friends John and Jessica over to watch it - John was from Chicago and Jessica from Charleston, South Carolina.  You can guess which one of them didn't give a rip about the game.  As it was coming time for the game to start, Ed said, "Hey, I forgot to get more beer this morning - Barb, you wanna come with me to the store and get some and we can grab some extra snacks and stuff, too?"  I said (in a moment which shall live in infamy), "WHAT?  And miss the KICK-OFF?"  I was totally serious.  Jessica started laughing, thinking I was making fun of John who was as fanatical about his team as it turned out I was about mine.  John goes, "Yeah.  They're about to kick off."  Ed and Jessica had a big laugh about that and went off to the store while John and I sat on the edge of our seats watching the coin toss and the whole nine yards.  (The Giants went on to win that game, by the way.)

So I'm watching the Super Bowl festivities a week or two later, Ed's out of town, I have a couple of other friends over.  Just as they're starting the kick-off, the phone rings.  I remember saying, "Who the HELL is calling me now?"  But with no Caller I.D. then and Ed out of town, I figured I'd better answer it.  It was Ed's brother-in-law Ron (his sister's husband).  He goes, "Hi, Barb.  Whatcha doing?"  I go, "Uh, watching the Super Bowl."  He goes, "Well you better get back to it - you wouldn't wanna miss the kick-off!" and laughs his head off.  I was like, "I'm gonna get you, Ron.  And Ed for putting you up to this."  Ed called me later on during half-time and rubbed it in some more.

Ever since then, and that was 1991, I think, every year Ron (or a representative if he's not able to) calls me just as they're kicking off.

One year, I figured I had him foiled, because I was going to a friend's party while Ed was going to be out of town, and it was two teams I didn't give a rip about, besides.  Altlanta was one of them.  I know this because as we were sitting there watching the kick-off, the damn phone rang.  Lance, the host, goes "Who the HELL is calling right now?"  I can't believe it didn't even occur to me it could be Ron.  Then I hear Lance, who'd had a few pre-game pops already, yelling in the kitchen, "Oh, F*** Atlanta!!!"  I knew it was him.  I knew because he lived in Atlanta and was born and raised there.  Then I hear, "Barb, it's for you.  Some guy who says he's your brother-in-law."  Turns out Ed had managed to get the phone number of my friend from me a week or so beforehand on the premise that he might be able to get home from his trip a day early and if he did, he'd call me there and get directions so he could come join us.  Sneaky bastard.  Another year, his sister (Ron's wife) called in his place because he was doing a shoot in China.  Again, I figured the chain would be broken.  Wrong.  Funny thing was I wasn't even watching it that year, but when the phone rang at about 6:35 p.m., I thought, "Don't tell me he's actually calling from CHINA!!!"

So on every Super Bowl Sunday, you'll always know exactly what I'll be doing when they're kicking off.

So far, the favorite sandwich of the Bettermost Forum'ers seems to be mostly the inimitable BLT.
