"Broke Bank Mounting"
« on: June 30, 2011, 02:10:41 pm »
Did anybody else manage to catch Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" last night? The opening section was entitled "Broke Bank Mounting" which was about the mounting debt crisis in the US.

However, the visual accompanying it was a variant of the poster for Brokeback Mountain - the one with Ennis in a white hat looking one way and Jack in a black hat looking another. As soon as this visual appeared there was plenty of appreciative applause from the audience.

What I find of interest here is that Brokeback Mountain has clearly entered the general consciousness so thoroughly that even after five years a play on the title and the accompanying poster can bring instant recognition. I'm not sure that can be said of many movies.

The faces in the original poster, of course, had been replaced by two others in the Daily Show's variant. The first, wearing the white hat, was clearly President Obama but I wasn't sure who was wearing the black hat? Was that John Boehner?

I couldn't find the Colbert version, but the idea has been out there before:
