Several things bother me about that answer. First of all, the writer assumes Jack and Ennis were two virgins. Ennis undoubtedly was, but it is left up in the air whether Jack was a virgin. If he was not, then the FNIT could have gone as pictured. The second thing that bothers me is that the writer completely ignores the fact that Annie Proulx wrote the scene in the first place in her story and the movie scene is very close to it, as you say, Steve. I think this answer is just another typical statement of "Straight people can't possibly tell a gay story." And that brings me to another thing that bothers me. The writer brands everyone associated with the movie as straight. If it were the other way around, everyone would cry foul.
