Maybe the question should read which one isn't?

Jack on some occasions does use his left hand (to catch the keys his father-in-law throws at him, when he's bull riding (I think) and when opperating a can opener).

I wouldn't be surprised to find that others are left handed as well.

Re the can opener:

It's a little hard to make out from the pics, but it looks to me like he's holding and stabilizing with his left hand, and using his right hand for opening the can.

And in any case, he's peeling the potato with his right hand:

You got me on the potato pealer but if it's a right-handed can opener (as they all are/were) and you're left-handed (as I am), how else are/were you suppose to open cans? You have to use your right hand and you're likely to do it badly.

Jack fits the profile IMO.

You're right, if he was left handed he would most likely still have to open the can (awkwardly) with his right hand. But no way would he peel a potato with a knife with his "wrong" hand.

(and btw, you can buy all kinds of tools for left handed use -among them can openers - here, I'm sure you can in Canada too)

Yes you can - nowadays, but you pay extra. Not everyone chooses to pay the premium.

More to the point, in 1963, this was not an option. Being left-handed and having gone through elementary school in the late the 50's, early 60's, I can attest that left handed scissors were not an option and I was never very good at that skill. I was never punished for using my left hand, but a half generation before mine, corrective measures (read punishment) were used to MAKE people use their right hand - so Jack using his right hand to peel potatoes might just be a reflection of his having become semi-ambidextrous.

As for today's generation ... how many left handed kids are using the left handed option for the mouse on the school computer?

We're still living in a right handed world. And so smart people are frequently left handed ... having to figure out their way in what they see as a backwards world.

Did you know that since Richard Nixon there have been only 2 right-handed (and one ambidextrous) president?

What Roland said on the handedness. I went to elementary school in the mid 70ies, and while not punished, I was often asked to use my right hand for stuff, both at home and at school. Adults were willing to let it be when I insisted on using my left hand, but they would ask again on other opportunities.
I had an especially nice set of felt-tip pens which I was allowed to color with only when using the right hand. ::)
Which of course I didn't do, and at one point my mother finally gave up.

And nobody had ever heard of scissors or other instruments for left-handed people.

As for Sonja's question: Jack also cuts the turkey with his right hand, but shaves with his left hand in the beginning (yeah, I looked it up). Was Jack the answer you wanted to hear?

As for being forced to use your right hand. Yes, unfortunately that happened a lot (I sincerely don't hope any more). I have met a lot of older people (patients), who told me they were forced to write with their right hand in school. Consequently they write with their right hand to this day, but usually do everything else with their dominant, left, hand. Usually there wasn't as much pressure on them to do other things with their right hand.

All this to say, that if Jack peels potatoes with his right hand, I would imagine he's right-handed.

That was before I checked the shaving scene that Chrissi mentioned. I would imagine shaving with your wrong hand is very difficult, and would probably not have been forced upon you. Maybe our Jake actually is ambidexter?

And, to answer your question Chrissi: no, Jack is not who I had in mind.

8. Which caracter in the movie is left-handed?

In the first 10 minutes of the movie, Jack does most things with his right hand (drinks, lights up a cigarette), but he also shaves with his left hand.

The answer you're probably seeking is Aguirre. Even though he does do a few things with his right hand (unlocks the trailer door, carries his thermos) he does a lot more with his left hand: answers phone, points, tosses watch and lights a cigarette.

I'll be checking for more lefty action in the movie as I try and remember what my next question was suppose to be.  ;D I know I had one ...
