The progression of Alma's colors
« on: January 26, 2007, 11:59:03 pm »
Forgive me if this has been discussed before.  But damned if I didn't notice something new tonight on Viewing #24.  The first time we see Alma after the wedding, she is all decked out in Ennis' color - tan (on the sledding hill).  The next time we see her, she is decked out in Jack's - blue (folding laundry).  The third time, the main color is pink/red (fireworks).

So she wears Ennis' color at first - she is madly in love with Ennis and wants to be everything he is.  Then she wears Jack's color - she is trying to hold on to Ennis and so wants to be everything he wants.  Then the red - knowing she can't be everything Ennis is or wants, she clings to the idea that the very domesticity of their relationship will bind him to her.

Later, still, she wears predominantly green.  And we come to see that to be the main color in Monroe's house.  She has started to give up the ghost when she starts donning the green (in the "Condiments/Ketchup" scene).  The last time we see her, she is dressed completely in deep rose and surrounded by green.

No more beans!
