The Fire

(April 1978)
Ennis looked up at the mountain.  “It’s onward and upward” Jack said.

Ennis threw a sly glance at Jack.  But he didn’t answer him.

They began riding up the trail.  It was a picture postcard perfect day, with a surprisingly soft breeze and bright blue sky. They rode up the mountain silently, with Jack leading the way.

“Hey, why are you goin’ so fast?” Ennis called out.  “This ain’t a race.”

 Ennis shook his head, Jack still liked to show off sometimes, still wanted the bragging rights.  But not all the time.

They finally arrived, high up on the mountain.  They dismounted the horses.  Ennis stood for a moment, and looked at Jack.  He waited so long for this time.  He rubbed his shoulder, it still hurt from that night.  Thanksgiving night, and the two fights, and being thrown upon the ground.  He was still trying hard to forget that night, and Alma’s words.  The words that still tore right through him.

“Let’s get the tent up fast” Jack said, as he a came real close to Ennis and wrapped his arms around him.  Ennis felt the fire rising up in him.  He wrapped his own arms tightly around Jack, as if he needed to hold on to him.  The fire was getting hotter.  The fire was burnng deep inside him.  But the fire couldn’t burn up the ever present, stinging pain that was also still deep within him.

Hi Leslie, I found your story about the Lazy L Ranch one day while scoping this site.  It took me 3 days to finish reading it, but it was worth it.  Amazing story - I know you've heard that before - but I wanted to put my 2 cents worth in.  Wouldn't it be lovely if things would have worked out for Jack and Ennis.  Hopefully it can happen today, or am I being too optimistic?

Merrily

Hey, Merrily, thank you...

For anyone who is wondering, there is a whole Lazy L universe. The first story was A Love Born From Steel and can be found here:

http://lazylfarm.livejournal.com/417.html

There was a sequel, Through The Veil Of Time which starts here:

http://lazylfarm.livejournal.com/20162.html

"Veil" takes place in 2006. Jack and Ennis are in their 60s and have had 30 happy years together.

There is also a thread here on the fanfic board, "Life at the Lazy L" which might be fun to look at. And Jack has been known to post here at Bettermost once in awhile. He has an account.

Thanks so much, Susie!  I love your smiling icons, btw - and your Jack montage is awesome!   :)

 :laugh:  Janice, I love the way you worded that - that was as good as reading a drabble!

Oh, Marl - I have to echo Susie's words - that is so heartbreaking.  :'(  - and so beautifully written.  And I really like the fact that you've touched on something we haven't addressed a lot in drabbles - that awful night and it's effect on Ennis.

Thanks,
Marie

Sweet 'n Tart

Jack chewed thoughtfully and looked up at his mother.  "This is delicious, mama – what'd you put in the cherry cake this time?"

"Rhubarb, honey.  I like it too.  Cherries and rhubarb are both a pretty red, but one's sweet and one's tart."  Mrs. Twist smiled. "Funny how that works, isn't it?  Put two opposites together and you get something special."

Jack started at his mother's words, and quickly hid his smile in his coffee cup as he felt heat rising in his face.  "Yep, sure is special, Mama.  Real special."

Hey Susie!  Thank ye kindly!  ;)

I have a dabble too..

Fading Dreams..

Two lovers lie entwined on a riverbed.
Their writhing bodies pulsate and dance
To the tune of a song only they can hear.
The morning sun smiles and raises its sleepy head..

In the arms of my dearest, I start the day
Alive, bright eyed and bushy tailed,
Eager and glowing with delight;
For in his arms, my woes remain at bay..

In the arms of my dearest, I need not lie
To make up for all that I lack,
I need no barricades, no weapons
For there is no battle, no sad excuse to die..

The memories seep into my soul, feeding my thirst
He starts to fade away, just as I cling tighter;
His essence flows like blood in my veins,
Soon he becomes air and light; my last and my first..

I lie alone on this riverbed, naked and cold,
Frightened, but patiently awaiting his return.
Hours tick away, night slowly drowns the day;
I’m still here, waiting for him.. to have and hold..

He awakes at daybreak, the light on his face.
The morning sun beckons and whispers sweetly –
I never left, never will…
In the arms of my dearest, there ain't no sweeter place..
