                                            Never Enough

Jack looks down at Ennis and smiles, the kind he has, that sorta starts slow, and
gains power as it goes...looking into Ennis eyes with the love they both, need, and feel  ."So how ya been Cowboy?"  "All right guess."   " N you."  "How come you brung that old clock with
you Jack?"  "Ha ha, yeah that.  Well Bobby insisted."  "Bobby?  What for?"  Ennis asked ,
with a real puzzled look on his face.  "He got this thing he wants me to go to, when I get
back.  That is if I get back in time."  "I told him I would have to get started real early in the
morning, to get there in time, ta make it."  "See its kinda important, to him ."  "They are havin this play at his school."
"It's about this peculiar old man."  "He happens to be rich."  "But he
goes round, all the time, in raggedy old clothes..crappy shoes n hat."
     "Why's that?"
"Well it turns out he's afraid.  Afraid that people'll find out he is a Jew,  and they mite hurt
him cause a his beliefs, and all."
"Well Jack, that dont explain, bout the clock."  "Yeah it does."  "He wanted me to take it.
Be sure, and get up on time , ta make it back.  Cause hes playin the old man."
Ennis lookin rather crestfallen.   Says   "well."  Jack smiles softly saying "Well i told him
I wasnt sure I'd be back n time.."

I liked this line, especially, Janice:

Jack looks down at Ennis and smiles, the kind he has, that sorta starts slow, and gains power as it goes...

Really nice!!  And - you saved me from going through drabble withdrawal!  LOL!

Thanks,
Marie

All right, I'll admit, I am taking a shortcut here...my mind is working overtime on some "Veil" stuff and I can't clear it out enough to write an original drabble. But "alarm clock" reminded me of this little interlude in Chapter 13 of A Love Born From Steel. Enjoy...

The Big Ben alarm clock sounded very loud at 2:30 in the morning. Jack reached over and pushed the button to silence it. He yawned, stretched, rubbed his eyes then turned to Ennis. “Time t’wake up, cowboy,” he said softly into Ennis’s ear.

Ennis stretched. “Yup, give me a minute,” he said, yawning.

Jack sat up. “I’ll go make some coffee,” he said, pulling on a pair of jeans that lay on the chair in the corner.

“Sounds good,” said Ennis. “Make a big pot. I’ll take a Thermos.”

Jack pulled on a shirt. “Will do, cowboy,” he said.

In the kitchen, Jack got the coffee started on the stove, then went down to the basement to bring up the cooler. He rummaged through the box of camping supplies and pulled out two bowls, two cups, and some spoons. He brought everything back upstairs.

He opened the refrigerator and took out a carton of milk and another of orange juice and put them in the cooler. He had made a bunch of sandwiches the night before and wrapped each individually in a sandwich bag. He added those, along with a baggie of sliced cucumbers and carrot sticks. Beverages were next—several cans of Coke along with two beers for Ennis. Then, two apples, a banana, and a package of Oreos, followed by the finishing touch: three individual boxes of Cheerios. Jack figured the girls would be hungry when they woke up and they might not be somewhere where it would be convenient to stop for breakfast right away.

Ennis came into the kitchen as Jack was finishing his packing. He looked at the cooler, then looked at Jack. “You take such good care of me, cowboy,” he said. “Thanks.”

A sweet memory for me too, Leslie - Ennis going to get Junior and Jenny.  You know me and my mania for minutiae - I loved knowing exactly what was in that cooler!  Thanks - now Janice's drabble has that sibling!  :)

Hiya,

I thought I'd share one more drabble ..
Sorry if it is alittle heavy ..  I started out wanting to write something cheerful but it somehow headed in this direction ..:-\

Tainted skies ..

The evening sky boasted a bright orange color
As if the clouds were on fire;
There was a peculiar smell in the air
Like that of iron in freshly-shed blood..
The high-pitched cries of a coyote pierced the air
Insistent and mournful..
Jack sat huddled by the campfire,
Shivering uncontrollably
Clutching his enamel whiskey cup
His head buried in his chest ..

Ennis lay asleep in the tent
He felt Jack lay down behind him
Jack's cold hand slipping underneath his old canvas coat,
Roaming, starving for the warm flesh.
He closed his eyes, his breath quickened ..
He turned to face Jack, to touch him
Instead, there lay the carcass
Of the coyote he'd shot at first light
Trickles of its blood seeping into the bedroll ..

5:12 a.m.
He awoke suddenly
He was hard
His face drenched in sweat
His pulse racing ..
He felt sick and dirty
An uneasy feeling crept upon him..
Something felt wrong, tainted, broken ..

Later that night
Sat alone in the silence of his trailer,
He held the postcard in his hand
He read it over and over and over again..
His tears dripping on the bold letters in red.
His mind flashed back to the images in the dream:
His Jack shivering alone by the dying fire ..
The burning skies, the slain coyote, the flowing blood ..
