The Week of Fog
(May 1985)
Ennis spent the next days in a fog.  .......

Nicely done.  The title is really apt... ya get those weeks sometimes...

Send a card? Somethin'?”

Nice touch...  Cracks in Ennis' "rugged individualism"... and the distances he has to cover just to say something...  -smile...   Thanks..

.  .  . As always their meeting brings on an indescribable bliss, easy familiar companionship each had known only with the other. . . .

Can't be said better than that, Mark.

.  .  .He was glad to have someone there who knew what grief was.

It really is a comfort to be around those who understand, isn't it?

.  .  .
Ennis took a long look at Tom.  Then he looked up at the stars.  “I hope you understand” he softly whispered.

Ennis held out his hand.  Tom took it and held it tight.

Oh, Marl - you made me teary.  :'( This is so beautifully written and you've captured Ennis perfectly.

Thanks, all
Marie

A late contribution.. :)
(Hope it is not too depressing for a friday night .. )

I am but a restless soul ..

A gust of wind blows out this candlelight
My restless soul squirms in pitch darkness.
Unrelenting demons to my left, center and right
Taunting and suffocating any chance at happiness ..

A vengeful wave shatters this lifeboat
I am faced with the perils of this cold, dark sea.
My limbs grow weary as I kick to stay afloat
Air and water flood my lungs; burning insides are all that be ..

A travelling man wanders with no compass or map
No fire to warm his bones, no morsel to nibble
Several pathways run parallel, some overlap
I long to find one way out, but I'm worn and feeble ..

You, my darlin, are my compass, my lifeboat, my light
Now that you're departed, I am nothing but a restless soul
Burdened with this pain I can't undo, this wrong I can't right,
This heart I can't mend, this longing to feel you .. to feel whole ..

Afternoon.

TH: another great addition.  Ennis is slowly moving forward.  He doesn't want to lose Jack; wish he had a picture. Maybe Mom Twist could send him one.  Still, Tom is there and is understanding and is helping Ennis see is not an island alone unto himself, and needs to open up to the world.

Thanks for your story of Ennis.

Thanks for your comments but I'm getting a little confused here.  The Neighbour with Tom in it and "Ennis Del Mar: Ranchand" as you've styled it are two separate tales... and I'm not understanding why they are getting run together...  -smile

Evenin'.

TH: you're right...my mistake.  Credit goes to marlb42...Different story than yours, and one I also enjoy very much.  Both are tales of Ennis moving on with his life, making something of it, and not crawling into a bottle and dying young and embittered.

I called it "Ennis Del Mar: Ranchhand", to distinguish it from the tale which I called "Ennis Del Mar: A Man of God," from the last line in that story. Do you have a different name for yours?

Yours is great tale.  A touch of mysticism, brought into the everyday life of Ennis and the others.  Ghosts and spirits. Greg simply making himself part of Ennis' life, and Ennis being the better for it. Ennis can miss Jack now.  But, has he ever seen Jack in the distance, or close up, like  the foreman has seen his father?

Thanks again.

Poetry doesn't usually get through to me as immediately as prose does... but...

This last stanza did!    Thanks...  -smile
