I hope David reads the drabbles, because sweetheart, this one's for you!  :-*

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
April, 2004

Ennis shifted from one foot to another as the security line inched forward. He held his ticket and boarding pass in his hand, along with his license.

“You can put your license away,” said Jack. “They won’t need ta see that again.”

“I don’t see why we just couldn’t drive,” said Ennis. “This is a pain in the ass.”

“It’s a helluva long drive ta Massachusetts, especially since we’re just goin’ for the long weekend. Flyin’ makes sense and you’ll be rested for the weddin’.”

Ennis grunted.

As the reached the checkpoint, Jack started pulling off his boots. “What’re ya doin’?” Ennis asked.

“Ya gotta take off yer boots, c’mon,” replied Jack, as he deposited his in the bin.

“I think my socks got holes in ‘em!”

“No one will notice, no one cares, just take ‘em off.”

“This is a fuckin’ pain in the ass!”

“Ennis…” Jack cautioned, smiling at the uniformed TSA agent. “We don’t travel much, ain’t used ta the procedure.”

The agent nodded and gave Ennis a broad smile. “Sir, if you could just empty your pockets…coins, keys, take off your watch….”

“I don’t wear a watch,” Ennis muttered. “Do I need ta take off my ring?” he asked, holding up his hand.

“No sir, that probably won’t be a problem. But your hat and jacket need to come off.”

A second smiling TSA agent waved Ennis through the scanner, and gave Ennis a wink as he stepped off the rubber mat. “Jesus Christ, Jack!” Ennis whispered, as he retrieved his boots from the grey bin. “He fuckin’ winked at me!”

“Yer a good lookin’ man, what can I say?”

“I’m old enough ta be his father!”

“Mebbe he likes his men with a bit a age and experience…”

“Oh fer Christ’s sake,” said Ennis, slipping his wallet back into his jeans. “Why couldn’t we just drive?”

A Trip (Part 2)

June 1976, New York City

Jack and Ennis left the Cowboy Bar, and they began walking down the street, squinting in the sun.  They could not believe that there were places like that, just for men, but they both felt odd being there.

Two guys walked towards them, one was tall, the other shorter, both were wearing jeans and tee shirts.  They were holding hands, right there on the street.

Both Jack and Ennis turned and stared as the men walked by, their mouths agape.

Jack began saying “Did you see that, I can’t believe…..”

Just then a fat policeman called out to them.  He was standing next to a blue parked car, writing a parking ticket.

“Hey, you guys need some help?, he called out to them.

Jack and Ennis both looked at him and shook their heads.

“You’re not from here, are you?” the policeman asked.

Jack smiled, “No, from Wyoming, we came on an airplane.”

The fat policeman waved, “Have a good time in New Yawk, but watch out for ……”

But a big, dirty, white truck rolled by and neither could hear what they should watch out for.

Jack and Ennis kept on walking and walking with no idea where they were going.  They passed restaurants with tables outside, record stores, and lots of old brick buildings.  They passed lots of people on the street like they had never seen before.

They kept walking, it was a beautiful, warm, sunny day.

They reached a park with a big stone arch.  Jack said “Let’s sit down for a while”

They sat down on a bench.  All around were couples, sitting on the benches, lying in the grass, and sitting on the gray stone steps of the fountain with the splashing water.

Jack held out his hand.

Ennis hesitated, then took Jack’s hand and wrapped it tightly with his.

They sat there, like that, for a long, long time.

Oh, a two-parter - like a little drabble mini-series!  Very nicely done, Marleen - love this ending especially!

Thanks, guys!

“Yup.”

“Boarding Pass?”

“Yup.”

“Yup.”

“Okay, that’s your plane right there…gettin’ ready to board.”

“En, can’t park here.  That crazy woman waving her arms is gonna give you a ticket for sure.”

“Fuck it.  I’m walkin’ you in.  Let’s go.”

Jack grinned.
