Okay, I'll go first .. :)

A Box of Secrets ..

June 1984

He was blossoming into a handsome young man; he did his schoolwork and helped with chores around the house.  He was a good kid, but he hardly told her anything these days.  She barely knew his friends, who he was dating if he was doing so, where he hung out when he was gone for hours every weekend and why on earth he had ruined his hair with that silly Mohawk cut.   She hoped he was not experimenting with sex or heaven forbid, drugs.  He was shutting her out and it scared her to death.  Jack was gone, her father was gone; her son was the one man in her life she desperately needed to cling to; yet he was slipping away.

She wandered into his bedroom one Sunday afternoon; he was out with a group of friends.  She looked around the little room; he sure kept it tidy, she couldn’t fault him that.  She sighed and turned to leave when she saw a box hiding in the shadows underneath the twin bed.  She pulled it out and slowly went through the pile of comic books on the top.  Then she saw a magazine with PlayGirl  printed on the front in bright pink letters.  She leafed through it and gasped at a nude model with a haughty look on his face.  She stood stock-still looking at it when he came bursting into the room.

“Ma!  What’re ya doing in here?” he cried, a look of surprise on his face.

“What is this, young man?” she turned and faced him, holding out the magazine.  “You explain to me what you are doing with this, and don’t give me no cock and bull story either!”

He gave her a bold stare, folded his arms and said nothing.

“Well??” she yelled, her temper slowly boiling over.  He rolled his eyes and shook his head.

“Ma, will ya relax?  I’m 17 now!  Stop treating me like a child!”  He looked her squarely in the eye, “Besides, I didn’t buy those; I found ‘em in the basement.  Look at the dates on ‘em, Ma.”  Her hands trembled as she closed the magazine to look at the first page.

“Ma?” she finally looked up at him.  “Was dad gay?” he asked quietly.

Hey drabblers!

I know I've been missing in action a bit in this thread. I'm catchin up and I'm now on page 71. What can I say? I'm in awe at the talent being displayed here.

You guys make is seems so effortless. You're given a few words and, like magic (okay, okay, i don't know the first thing about writing, so I'm guessing some hard work may be involved  :)) these wonderful tales appear!

I LOVE IT
Off to do more reading.

Thanks all you drabblers!

Your admirer,
Fabienne

Secrets, indeed.  We're left with so many questions aren't we?  You're not only a prolific writer, Milli - you're such a gifted one with such an obvious compassion for, and understanding of, the characters.  Thank you.

Ditto, Fabienne - this is a magical place!   :)

71 days. June, 10th to August, 20th.
71 days without a word.
71 days since he was told he could get time off at the end of August, after all.
71 days since he had mailed the postcard.
71 days were enough.

He went to the phone booth.
