Katherine, you and I definitely ought to meet up someday for a drink or 5: you took the words from the tips of my fingers, because I remembered precisely this song this morning, and was going to post what you posted!
Reminds me of those two loveys indeed.
" - I'm vegan now."
"-Vegan? I thought you were still Church of England"

Oh my god, Isabelle! What are the chances?! We clearly are exchanging telepathic messages across the Atlantic.

Heard this Gordon Lightfoot song on the radio yesterday for the first time in a long time, and was struck by how much it seems to channel Jack towards the end (minus the references to Ann, of course).

Carefree Highway

Pickin up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream
I wonder how the old folks are tonight
Her name was Ann and Ill be damned if I recall her face
She left me not knowin what to do
Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Turnin back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if shell ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin is just bein satisfied
With knowin I got no one left to blame

Carefree highway, got ta see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Searchin through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep
I wonder if the years have closed her mind
I guess it must be wanderlust or tryin to get free
From the good old faithful feelin we once knew

Carefree highway, let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
Let me slip away on you
Carefree highway, got ta see you my old flame
Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you
No more beans!

I live in Chicago at the moment (though by October, who knows ...?). Any chance you'll be traveling farther west? Let's keep in touch, Isabelle, just in case you go west or I go east!

King Of The Road
Roger Miller

Trailer for sale or rent,
Rooms to let fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets;
I ain't got no cigarettes.
Ah but two hours of pushin' broom
buys an eight by twelve four bit room.
I'm a man of means, by no means king of the road.

Third boxcar, midnight train;
Destination Bangor, Maine.
Old worn out suits and shoes,
I don't pay no Union dues.
I smoke old stogies I have found,
Short but not too big around.
I'm a man of means, by no means king of the road.

I know every engineer on every train,
All of the children and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain't locked when no one's around.

Trailer for sale or rent,
Rooms to let fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets;
I ain't got no cigarettes.
Ah but two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four bit room.
I'm a man of means, by no means king of the road.

He Was A Friend Of Mine
Arranged by Bob Dylan

He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
Every time I think about him now
Lord I just can't keep from cryin'
'Cause he was a friend of mine

He died on the road
He died on the road
He never had enough money
To pay his room or board
And he was a friend of mine

I stole away and cried
I stole away and cried
'Cause I never had too much money
And I never been quite satisfied
And he was a friend of mine

He never done no wrong
He never done no wrong
A thousand miles from home
And he never harmed no one
And he was a friend of mine

He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
Every time I hear his name
Lord I just can't keep from cryin'
'Cause he was a friend of mine.

Whenever I hear this song I always imagine it's Jack thinking about Ennis. The lyrics are beautiful, the music is very intimate, and Peter Gabriel sings it brilliantly. 'In Your Eyes' from the 'So' album... worth checking out if you've never heard it before.

Love, I get so lost sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are.

All my instincts, they return
The grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside.

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
Oh, I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes.

Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive.

And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside.

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
Oh, I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes.

Will you stop playing with that radio of yours, I'm trying to get to sleep!

HAHAHA! Thanks for the chuckle Isabelle - I needed that...

I always liked Genesis much more when he was in it too...
