Hey Chuck,
The Santander purchase of Soveriegn was big news here today.
I have a friend who works on the investment side at Wachovia. She was telling me that she's hoping that the Wells-Fargo purchase of Wachovia goes through. She's worried that if Citi gets another crack at it and wins, that people will lose jobs. Her reasoning was that Citi and Wachovia have some common territory, so there would be redundanices. Well-Fargo has luittle to nothing in this part of the country, so its really an expansion for them. It sounds like a similar situation with Soveriegn and Santander.
I don't know what your career path looks like so far, but I have found that mergers can open up all kinds of new opportunities for existing employees who are looking to move up or over into something new. While I was working at Bell Atlantic, I made a significant step up the corporate ladder right after we bought NYNEX, and again after we merged with GTE and became Verizon. Some of my colleagues saw the scope of their existing positions expanded to the point where their salaries were increased. So keep your eyes open.
I wish you luck.
Milo
