The hometown newspaper still carries inserts from supermarkets advertising prices or sale prices of items. Is that done elsewhere?
My paper still has some advertising inserts, I think, although back when I took the print edition I thew them into the recycling bag so fast I didn't have time to examine them. (I switched to digital only when I moved to an apartment. Of the 200 units in my building, two people subscribe to the print edition of the local paper. I know them both, and they're both around 80.)
They may still have grocery store inserts, and the interior pages may still contain department store ads. But the size and volume are vastly reduced from what they were in the 1990s.
It's kind of counterintuitive, or at least it was for me, that while the loss of advertising is what led to the downfall of print newspapers, the biggest part of the loss was classified ads. Now people go online to look for jobs, cars, used items, etc.
