There must be a large, vague area between the classified sexual preferences.  
Like being straight but having a strong, special bond with someone from the same gender.
Hanno and Max make no secret of the fact that they have that bond. So not like they are really attracted to each other sexually, but more like: if I have to make out with another guy, I want it to be you. And it's not unthinkable that there are some feelings during the intimate love scenes.

Wow, I'm good at this. Talking a lot without getting my point straight.
But I'm a "feel" person. And in the last scene of Auslandseinsatz they look at each in a way that makes people think they are going to kiss. There's something special between them and I really love it.

She invited Kay to the party because she knew he was gay and she was ok with it.  But when she found out he and Marc had been together, she (probably) hated him.  Right?   

But wouldn't you hate him? She didn't hate him because he was gay but because of him she lost Marc.

Im Publikumsgespräch am Samstagabend im CinemaxX kam natürlich auch die Frage nach der sexuellen Identität der beiden Schauspieler. Doch Hanno Koffler und Max Riemelt sind einfach zu gute Schauspieler, als dass sie sich da festlegen ließen. Für sie war das Ziel ihrer Arbeit eine überzeugende Liebesbeziehung zu spielen, was ihnen mehr als bravourös gelungen ist. Und vielleicht geben sie damit ja schon einen Wink auf die Verkörperung von Begehren.   

How I read this: the audience asked about their sexual identity. They gave no concrete answer, just that their goal was to play a convincing love couple.
Again the word "love". Not "gay".

I found the photo I meant but I think the file type is not right to put it here. If you google "max riemelt hanno koffler auslandseinsatz" pictures you will find it. It's the premerie of auslandseinsatz. I think you've seen them already. There's one max en hanno standing next to each other, Hanno a little bit leaning to max's side.
