My guess is because May 1 became associated with Socialism and Anarchism.

It is indeed, that's the whole point of it!

You're welcome  :)

I don't know why USA picked another day instead of going with the rest of the world.

And that is precisely why the U.S. wouldn't do it then.

The gigantic American fear of anything even remotely to the left.

Probably one of the reasons your social safety net has so much bigger holes in it than a lot of (all?) European countries.

Don't worry, many of us -- including, I imagine, all Americans here -- know that. And yes, it has much bigger holes than all European countries as well as Australia, Canada, Japan.

The gigantic American fear of the left is a fear held mostly by the right. Which, believe it or not represents only about half of Americans.

For example, it is one of just a handful of countries in the world that does not offer paid leave to new parents. The others are Papua New Guinea, Suriname, Micronesia, The Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, and Tonga.

It's all very sad. One of the richest countries in the world and doesn't have some of the most basic benefits.

I think of it as more like incredibly stupid, but either applies. No health insurance but plenty of guns. And those long predated Trump.

Yeah I know. I think guns have some sort of symbolic value in the US that they don't have here. At least from what I've read.

I've heard there's a small contingent of neo-Nazi-like people in Sweden who espouse violence. I believe the sign over the gates of the Dachau concentration camp disappeared and were found in Sweden. Or was it Norway?

In the U.S. there is a "gun culture." It is widespread and when its enthusiasts are together, the topic often turns to guns. This interest escalates over time until the people seem to be interested in nothing else. They seem to be fixated on defending themselves against the "others"--they are distrustful of strangers and block themselves off into tight groups. These people think that other people are thinking like them, selfish violent thoughts. But that's not really true. I think a lot of people have been brainwashed.

Oh yes, we do unfortunately have our share of violence espousing people.
Nazis, islamists, extreme leftists, gang criminals are the most common examples.

The groups are not huge, but they are very dangerous and the gang criminals have been very active for the last 5-10 years. Shooting mostly each other, but also totally innocent people have been killed.

We don't have the equivalent of your gun culture. Legal gun owners here must have a licence, and they are only given to registered hunters or members of shooting clubs that shoot as a sport.
