Old time resident returns
« on: August 07, 2026, 07:53:38 am »
So...I've been away so long I forgot my damned password! ....then realised that my email address I used back in the day was slightly different too and panicked (feeling like Jack and Ennis locked out of the damned motel room ::) ). Ten minutes of head scratching, though, and fortunately my old password came back to me, and hell yeah, I'm glad to be back!!!

There was a time when I was a full-time resident here, and had some truly wonderful times with wonderful friends here, and a fabulous weekend in Brussels in 2008 for The Dark Knight with a group of fantastic Brokies.  :) Almost 20 years later and my memory's got more holes than Swiss cheese, and their names escape me...Kelda, I remember, and I seem to remember a Christine and Jude too?

So what's happened in the meantime? Real life, work and health mostly got in the way. I've had a load more medical issues, surgeries, and started my second degree (then in my final year decided to switch to another degree so ended up with two more years to do!). The degree (part-time) has kept me pretty much busy all the time these last five years. I never forgot Brokeback though. It kinda slipped into the background, though never left me. My friend Jane, who I first saw Brokeback with sadly died three years ago, and she was the only one who even half understood my Brokeback obsession. It's the only film that's ever affected me in such a way, but I remember coming out of the cinema afterwards, and I completely lost the strength in my legs and Jane, who was 5ft nothing, had to pin me up against the wall to stop me crashing to the floor while someone went and got a chair for me.

Over the years though, it's funny how just the littlest things would remind me of Brokeback, and I'd still find myself using Brokieisms when I least expected it. What brought me back was a couple of weeks ago someone commenting that the most recent heatwave we've had was the warmest week of the year. As this year's academic year had just finished and I had no reading or coursework to do I'd finally got back into picking up writing the novel I started when I was 18 (I'm 53 now), as my main characters who disappear from my head for long spells at a time sometimes, had suddenly reappeared, so I was re-reading where I'd got up last time I'd had a spell of writing, and while I was re-reading where I'd got to, it suddenly struck me that my main characters, Finn and Kerry, are very much like Jack and Ennis in temperament, even though when I first started writing about them it was over 10 years before I'd ever heard of Brokeback, and that, plus a work colleague's mention of "warmest week of the year", prompted me to pick up Brokeback again....and was totally lost again!! When I'd finished crying, distraught that I needed more of Jack and Ennis, to my delight I found that I'd still got haunted-by-BBM's 'Missing Motel Moments', 'Pine Creek' and 'Warmest Week of the Year' on my Kindle. After a solid 5 days of reading them whenever I got the chance (it's so long since I read them, it was like reading them for the first time again!) I was back almost 20 years ago thinking about nothing but Brokeback and unable to concentrate on anything else, again distraught that I needed to read more of Jack and Ennis, and then found I'd also still got MadLori's 'Human Interest' and 'Two Crows Joy' on my Kindle. I'm half way through Human Interest now (at least I've still got Two Crows Joy to go), but then suddenly last night remembered Bettermost, and praying that it was still here and not deserted with tumbleweeds rolling down the streets, typed Bettermost into Google...

...and oh, how good it feels to be back amongst people who get it!!!! I still don't understand how one short story and two characters who have never existed in real life can have such an effect on me, how I can grieve for two people I never knew, and what draws me back to Brokeback eventually, always, even 20 years later, but I'm so glad to be back! I always used to describe Bettermost to people as the best English lesson ever, where rather than having to debate some book you never really wanted to read anyway, you can debate everything about the story, characters, and everything you love about Brokeback endlessly with friends who totally understand it! And I'm so pleased to be back!

So yes, I know it's as corny as hell, but I'm gonna say it anyway....Brokeback got me good!

Welcome back, Rachel.

BM is a very small community these days, so it's really nice to see someone return!

I hear you about Human Interest! I'm pretty sure it saved my life back in the day! ::)

It's fun hearing about all these adventures and Brokieisms again!

Do you still live in the Peak District? I recently learned that I need to go to nearby Shropshire to scatter the ashes of my friend M. and his dog Lizzie.

Yes, still here on the edge of the Peak District. I can just about see the countryside from my bedroom window on a clear day.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. It's always hard losing someone. I'm having surgery on Wednesday to replace a finger joint due to arthritis and it'll be the first surgery I've had since losing my friend Jane three years ago. She always insisted on being the first to visit me in hospital whenever I had surgery, and more often than not she'd be sitting there waiting when I was wheeled back onto the ward. She was the only one who even half understood what Brokeback meant to me.

I've been in a strange mood ever since I came back to Brokeback (not helped by the looming surgery, I think). After years away, I thought I'd got over it, but it's hit me twice as hard this time. Thursday evening I made the mistake of hunting out more fanfics on AO3 because I'd almost finished re-reading Two Crows Joy. I say mistake, because although I found Jenna Hilary Sinclair's 'Someone New' (just started that and I'm loving it!) and the Force of Nature series, I also found a load of stuff by cynical21, and after reading 'The Short Leash' started on 'The Greatest Love'...

...Christ! Two important lessons learned! First - ALWAYS heed authors' notes at the start of stories...I was getting tired and skipped over the notes, totally missing the significance of "Jack's view from the other side", thinking it was just going to be from Jack's point of view. By just a few paragraphs in, I was crying, and by the end I was inconsolable. I was in the house on my own, and ended up leaving a long rambling WhatsApp voicenote for my two best friends who I'm at uni with. We all live at opposite ends of the country, though we get to meet up in person every so often, but if ever one of us is going through tough times it's hard being so far away. So I left this rambling 9-minute message rambling on about Brokeback and Jane, and about how I'd let her down because I wasn't there for her as much as I should have been because of my own health problems and because I didn't get to see her at the end, telling them that if they ever needed me they could call any time of day or night and I'd get there somehow. By the end of it they must have thought that I'd completely lost the plot. I'm not usually one for crying, and I never usually go off like that. I think with the exception of Brokeback, and even that didn't have such a violent effect on me, I've never read a piece of writing that had such an immediate and profound effect on me.

The second lesson I learned was that under no circumstances do you read anything like that before bedtime. I got very little sleep. Every time I closed my eyes all I could see was Jack and the tire irons.

And then this morning I've been doing some work on my family tree, which I've been researching on and off now for 25 years. These days I use Ancestry.com and I've quite extensively managed to map a load of branches of the family tree. I have one branch of the family in British Columbia, Canada (I spent 3 wonderful weeks there when I was 17), and a couple of weeks ago discovered that another offshoot of that branch was originally from the Iowa and Wyoming area. So this morning I was following up on some hints that Ancestry had served up, and came across a newspaper article about someone in the family. It was a report in the local newspaper about him being found badly beaten by the side of the road...yes, they thought probably with a tire iron. That set me off again!

I've got plenty to keep me busy and keep my mind off Brokeback and the looming surgery (in theory, if I could only concentrate on it). I've got so much cleaning and tidying up I need to do before the surgery because I know I'm going to struggle to do things one-handed at first, and Monday and Tuesday are going to be so busy at work trying to tie up loose ends and briefing my colleague who's going to have to take over my workload as well as her own while I'm off work.

On the bright side, keeping myself busy over the weekend, I've started work again on the novel I started writing back when I was 18 and never made a huge amount of progress on because over the years I've spent huge chunks of time researching it (including doing the degree I've almost finished now). Brokeback's reinvigorated me, and for the first time in about 6 years I'm making some progress on it, and I'm determined to finish it by the end of 2027!

Sorry, I wasn't going to ramble on this long!

Wow, you have been busy--thanks for the update! I've also gotten into genealogy over the past few years. Every once in a while I find a cache of old photos and newspaper clippings. That sets me off. There have been some sad discoveries but overall my family lines have had remarkable survival skills. And the number of children some of the women have had! Very impressive!

Sending hopes for a successful procedure and a smooth recovery. Hope you can type with one hand and keep us up-to-date or, better yet, dictate your posts!
