What Are You Doing for New Year's Eve?

I wonder why Denver doesn't "drop" something? What could it be? 

A snowball? A Denver boot? A beer stein? A marijuana joint?

Philadelphia could drop the Liberty Bell. It's broken already, so what difference would another crack or two make?

While I knew immediately what a beer stein is, I had to look up the Denver boot. On seeing the photos I remembered I had looked it up before.

A beer stein is a big mug for beer with a lid on it. Traditionally made of stoneware, hence the name.

The exact meaning can vary from region to region however.
Where I grew up, a "Stein" was simply a one liter glass filled with alcohol. Could have been either beer or white wine. And, in the case of wine, it had a small shotglass in it, standing on the bottom of the stein, filled with a stronger and colored type of liquor. It was popular with youth because it was set in the midddle of the table and shared by the whole group. Made a night out cheaper and it was fun, because we tried to not let the liquor flow out of the shotglass at the bottom.


My father had a small collection of beer steins, traditional ones like in the photo above. I have no idea where they are now. I'm afraid I gave them all way.

What could they drop in Denver? Hmm, maybe a horse (not a real one of course)? They have the Denver Broncos, they have the blue Mustang at DIA, they're cowboy country (maybe not as much as WY, but still). I think a bronco-dropping could become quite popular.

Au contraire! Going back to the beer stein, our former mayor and current governor started the first brewpub in the United States way back when and Denver was the crucible of the microbrewing industry, not to mention the home of the renowned Coors beer, which people used to smuggle across state lines.

We also have more days of sunshine than Florida, although the sun is too big to drop, and more high mountains than Switzerland, although a mountain is too big to drop. I guess Denver is just too big to have anything small enough to drop!!

Maybe we could drop a ham, a green pepper, and some eggs and call it a Denver omelet.
