I'm so sorry to tell you, but it happened again...

Hi folks,
as I had anticipated in another post, yesterday we had the Italian Oscar night here in Italy, that is the ceremony for the awards of the David di Donatello prizes, assigned by the Italian Cinema Academy.
BBM was one of the nominees, and I was eager to see it win the award in the Best Foreign Movie category. When actor Franco Nero - of Fassbinder's "Querelle" fame - opened the envelope and read the winner's name I was left in awe once again.
Just guess! BBM lost to CRASH once again...
I haven't seen CRASH so far - though I'm planning to buy the DVD as I've been told it's a very good movie - but was totally disappointed nevertheless as our beloved movie was defeated once again. Well. it's not too bad anyway. BBM won so many other accolades we shouldn't be complaining that much...
Good thing was that the award as Best European Community Movie went to Woody Allen's Matchpoint.

Hi Anke,
you're so right talking about Berlusconi. We (at least 51% of Italians) are so fed up with all what he's been saying in the past few years. I mean, nobody has anything to say about his ability - though maybe something could be said... - in business, but please. go away from the politcs scene.
I suspect he's suffering some sort of deep mental disease: he believes to be a direct emanation of God - if not God himself - and the rest is simply non-existent. And the same applies to a part of his fellow politician supporters and colleagues. He will never accept he has not won: pity that it lost only so slightly. This makes me wonder why there are still so many Italians that, somehow, believe his completely unreliable and incredible lies. Poor Italy!

So what has been the public reaction to BBM in Italy luigival?

It started in late January here in Australia too, and still showing in a couple of mainstream & arthouse cinemas.

Is it that surprising that Crash won?  A copy-cat of the academy awards maybe?

At least the Italians have good taste by awarding it the Lion d' Oro award at the Venice Film Festival.

Amy was just in Italy...she was talking about how nonchalantly everyone there was about BBM, no big deal you know? So I bet she will be surprised to hear this.

I was thinking today the slighly out there (but that's me, hey?) thought that, I wonder what Brokeback Mountain, the movie itself, feels/knows about this whole Oscar thing. I mean, we can interview Ang or Annie, but there is the actual life and intelligence in the whole of the movie itself; it is itself, and if it had a response, I think of it as being serene and accepting that it is what it is, a work of stunning depth, beauty, and truth, no bragging needed. In other words, the award it did not win does not matter. It "lets be." And same thing with this Italian mixup.

That was interesting Jenny.
I would have expected better of the Italians. And I'm also surprised that "Crash" would resonate with them.
One of Lee's biggest influences was Antonini and you can see his influence in the pacing, lyrical cinematography, and the characterizations of the "antihero" leads.
