Ember reminds me so much of Coco, but with darker coloring.

Lee, if you get a chance, please post a picture of Coco.  I'd love to see what she looks like.

Here is the sweet girl:

Well, my mother changed her mind again today (actually I think she had her mind made up all along and I was just wasting my breath). Coco is just a memory now. I got a terse email from my mom about 3:30 today "I'm going to say good-bye at 6:30 pm" and I left work early to go over, but I got caught in rush hour and didn't arrive until 10 minutes before Mom had to leave to take Coco to the vet's. After making a last-ditch plea to spare Coco's life, I gave up and took the dog for one last run in the meadow. We sniffed the flowers, chased a rabbit, did our business (her, not me!) and enjoyed the sunset. I left Mom and Coco with my daughter, who graciously volunteered to escort them to the vet, because I didn't feel up to it. Tears were streaming down my face...the last time I remember crying like that was 2000 after the election.

Ironically, Coco was healthier than ever during her last few weeks. She had lost weight and could run again. The vet had prescribed special food which was doing her good. Her main problem was cataracts caused by the diabetes, which made her sight fuzzy. But dogs can get by very well on their sense of smell. Try telling that to mom, however. You might as well talk to a brick wall.  :'(

Oh, Lee.  I'm so sorry.  I don't know what to say.  It just seems so...sudden.  Poor Coco.  Poor you.   :'(

I'm glad that you thought to take Coco for that last run.  I bet she really enjoyed those minutes with you in the meadow.  Maybe thinking about that last bit of happiness you gave her will help you feel better.  I can perfectly understand why you weren't able to go to the vet.  I doubt that I would be able to, either.

Thanks for posting the photo.  She looks like a very, very sweet dog and so trusting.  Who wouldn't love her?

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thank you Shasta and Fran. Yes, you read her very well, Fran. She was a very trusting dog. When it was time for her to go for a walk, she dutifully raised each paw in turn so they could be guided into her harness. The legs and paws of an Italian greyhound are almost impossibly delicate. And, she was so very loyal to my mother. When I gave her a last good-bye petting at the door, she just turned around and left me to see where Mom was. I don't blame my mom for the way things turned out, but I just feel like screaming, nevertheless!!
