Did You Vote Today?
« on: November 02, 2010, 04:06:47 pm »
I just got back from voting. Dad went too. I don't know why we bother though because he votes Republican and I vote Democrat and we cancel each other out!

I told him this wouldn't happen if he'd just vote Democrat but he'll never do it. lol

He's a die-hard conservative Republican through and through. :-\

David we have early voting here in TX, and Dusty and I voted last week.

Clearly your Dad and I are on the same page this year.  :)

I voted! I wanted  to vote for (all Dems, natch) on the Working Family ticket, but I was afraid, like a 2000 Floridian Retirees stumped with the butterfly ballot, I'd f*ck it up; so I just voted the straight Dem ticket. (So sorry, Matt Damon, I apologize!)

In re voting the straight ticket, for me, Gary Wills said it best in this last weekend's NYTMagazine  interview with Deborah Solomon:

"I always vote the party. It’s ridiculous not to. You may like a person who is Republican, but if you vote for that person, you’re voting for all the apparatus that comes along with it."

Done now.

I posted this on FB - but I will cross post here. A Muslim family was behind me in line and a Spanish-speaking coupled entered as I left. That makes me feel patriotic.

I voted on my way home this evening, after work and after the gym.

I have noticed two very odd things about this election.

On Saturday, I received two recorded political message phone calls, so I turned off my answering machine, because I didn't want to be inundated with recorded political messages until the polls closed. Well, since I turned off the machine, I have received only one probable political phone call. I can tell this because even though the answering machine is turned off, the caller ID unit still captures incoming phone numbers. This strikes me as very odd.

The other odd thing is that there were no party workers outside my polling place. Every election, even primaries, there are always party workers outside my polling place. Not today.

I voted at 5:00pm--took less than 15 minutes. Two years ago? It took 2 HOURS.

MY polling place (47th Street across from the UN) was so  quiet.

What is UP with people--is it apathy, or what?

There were no party workers where I voted either Jeff. And I found that a bit strange. There were a couple of security guards standing out there, but that was it. We vote at the Methodist Church down the street and I just figured maybe the church didn't want them out there. But now that the same thing happened where you voted, I'm beginning to wonder if there is something more to it... :-\

Now that you mention it, there wasn't anyone at my polling place either.

But I didn't think it was odd, as it was only 7:00am when I voted.  Polls had been opened for an hour at that time.

We walked right in and voted too, John. There were no lines at all. I was in and out of there in just a couple of minutes, except for the time I spent trying to use the scanner. It kept spitting my ballot out. I was beginning to get offended (not really!) until I noticed I was using the wrong scanner. It was for a different precinct. The one I was supposed to use was over on the other side of the room.

Dad took a bit longer to vote. He got confused, I think. There was a lady there helping him. But still, we were in and out of there really fast.

There were not many (any?) people outside my poll. There was just one person, and she was about the ballot initiative.

A campaigner for Governor Patrick, however, did stop by Paul's making sure that we'd voted.

There weren't many people at my polling place either.  There was a tiny line... but in terms of fanfare and people hanging around and signs, etc. It was very quiet.  In fact, from the outside of the building you'd never know that it was a polling place except for one piece of white office paper on the door that mentioned voting.  I had the address and my new voter registration card in hand with the address, which is really the only way I had confidence that I was in the right place when I arrived.

This was the first time I'd visited this new polling place since I moved.  My old polling place was always a lot more lively.

In my area, about 80% of voters are mail-ins. That's why the polls are quiet.

I lost my absentee ballot so voted a provisional ballot. My polling place was hoppin'-I've never seen so many people in my joint.
The newspaper wanted to take a picture of my fat ass voting and I had to politely decline.
