Marc Cohn - One safe place

How many roads you’ve traveled
How many dreams you’ve chased
Across sand and sky and gravel
Looking for one safe place

Will you make a smoother landing
When you break your fall from grace
Into the arms of understanding
Looking for one safe place

Life is trial by fire
And love’s the sweetest taste
And I pray it lifts us higher
To one safe place

How many roads we’ve traveled
How many dreams we’ve chased
Across sand and sky and gravel
Looking for one safe place

Isn't it beautiful?  :'(

Dolly Parton - Islands in the stream

Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown
I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb
I was soft inside, there was somethin going on
You do something to me that I cant explain
Hold me closer and I feel no pain
Every beat of my heart
We got somethin goin on
Tender love is blind
It requires a dedication
All this love we feel
Needs no conversation
We ride it together, ah-ah
Makin love with each other, ah-ah

Chorus:

Islands in the stream
That is what we are
No one in-between
How can we be wrong
Sail away with me to another world
And we rely on each other, ah-ah
From one lover to another, ah-ah

I cant live without you if the love was gone
Everything is nothin if you got no one
And you did walk in tonight
Slowly loosen sight of the real thing

But that wont happen to us and we got no doubt
Too deep in love and we got no way out
And the message is clear
This could be the year for the real thing

No more will you cry
Baby, I will hurt you never
We start and end as one, in love forever
We can ride it together, ah-ah
Makin love with each other, ah-ah

Oh I love that song. Didn't she also sing this with Kenny Rogers?

So many songs these days remind me of BBM. Of Jack and Ennis. Perhaps it's just an emotional time of year.... perhaps it's because my own BBM anniversary is getting closer. At any rate, I listened to "The Long and Winding Road" the other day and I immediately thought of Ennis and came very close to crying!  :-\

Then there is this one. It's one of my favourites and it makes me think of Jack and Ennis. Which may seem very strange, because the lyrics don't exactly fit their story (except for being drunk the first time..... ;) ) - but I've been thinking more times than one that in the end, despite all the heartbreak and disappointment and sadness, they were lucky. Lucky in finding each other and in experiencing the kind of love they shared. And I'm sure that they had rare and shining moments together when they would have agreed that the sentiment of this song was the perfect description of what they were feeling just there and then.

"Lucky" - Bif Naked

It was a monday, when my lover told me,
"never pay the reaper with love only."
What could I say to you, except, "I love you."
And "I'd give my life for yours."

I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones, dear.

The first time we made love, I... I wasn't sober.
(and you told me you loved me over and over!)
How could I ever love another, when I miss you every day...

Remember the time we made love in the roses?
(and you took my picture in all sorts of poses!)
How could I ever get over you, when I'd give my life for yours.

I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones, dear.

My dear, it's time to say I thank God for you.
I thank God for you in each and every single way.
And, I know... I know.. I know.. I know...

It's time to let you know, time to let you know.
Time to let you know, time to sit here and say...

I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones.
I know we are... we are the lucky ones, dear.
We are the lucky ones, dear...

Great words to that song "Lucky"........

Thank God, for Brokeback and for giving us Jack and Ennis........
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection

This one always gives me goose bumps...

Blood Brothers - Bruce Springsteen

We played king of the mountain out on the end
The world come chargin' up the hill, and we were women and men
Now there's so much that time, time and memory fade away
We got our own roads to ride and chances we gotta take
We stood side by side each one fightin' for the other
We said until we died we'd always be blood brothers

Now the hardness of this world slowly grinds your dreams away
Makin' a fool's joke out of the promises we make
And what once seemed black and white turns to so many shades of gray
We lose ourselves in work to do and bills to pay
And it's a ride, ride, ride, and there ain't much cover
With no one runnin' by your side my blood brother

On through the houses of the dead past those fallen in their tracks
Always movin' ahead and never lookin' back
Now I don't know how I feel, I don't know how I feel tonight
If I've fallen 'neath the wheel, if I've lost or I've gained sight
I don't even know why, I don't why I made this call
Or if any of this matters anymore after all

But the stars are burnin' bright like some mystery uncovered
I'll keep movin' through the dark with you in my heart
My blood brother

How many dreams you’ve chased
Across sand and sky and gravel

A few days ago in Denver, I was enjoying a fish-tacos lunch with Front-Ranger and EDelMar, and this song came on the restaurant's sound system. I got all excited, because I had posted it here back on May 25 (page 5 of this thread) as one of the songs that makes me think of Brokeback Mountain. What made it especially cool is that just after I posted it the first time, Isabelle wrote that SHE had been just about to post this song, that very day!

The song is by Pink Floyd, so I first heard it years ago, but my familiarity with it was renewed through a beautiful cover by Sparklehorse, on the soundtrack of Lords of Dogtown. It applies to Heath's character in LOD, but it's even more appropriate for BBM -- it sounds so much like Jack talking to Ennis that it gives me chills and/or makes me cry every time I listen to it. Aside from being by a British band, it would fit perfectly into the movie.

Anyway, I told Front-Ranger and EDelMar that I'd repost it, so here it is.

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
