We say:

"I got off the train"

"I got off the bus"

"I got off the airplane"

So, why is it we then say: "I got OUT of the car"? Why don't we say "I got off the car"?

If I said I got off the car, this would imply I was sitting ON the car, not IN it.

We even "get OFF a boat". But we get OUT of a car.

This language of ours is very weird, and it often doesn't make any sense.

Trains, buses, airplanes, cruise ships--you get ON using steps. Cars--you just step into. I don't know about boats--just a regular boat...I'd say get out of the boat.

Trains, buses, airplanes, cruise ships--you get ON using steps. Cars--you just step into. I don't know about boats--just a regular boat...I'd say get out of the boat.

But, yeah, I agree---our language is weird.

Okay, but what about this?!! We use steps to climb into a truck (as in a semi trailer truck) and we say "get out of the truck". I've never heard anyone say they got OFF the truck!

I've heard people say that someone "fell off the turnip truck"....or something like that. Don't ask me what that means. It's not the same as "falling off the wagon", tho.

I see what you mean about small boats though, Shasta. I've never heard anyone say they're getting OFF the canoe. They say they are "getting OUT of the canoe".
