"S" is Saint Ralph (2004)
« Reply #5060 on: September 24, 2008, 11:09:32 am »

IMDB: Set in Hamilton in 1954, Saint Ralph is the unlikely story of Ralph Walker, a ninth grader who outran everyone's expectations except his own in his bold quest to win the Boston Marathon. Ralph is a fatherless 14-year-old with a seriously ill mother, who knows he's a time bomb waiting to explode into greatness, except that he has no idea where that greatness will manifest itself. An unfortunate incident of self-abuse in the community pool inadvertently sets him on this road when, as penance, Ralph is conscripted to the cross-country team. Desperate to believe a miracle will bring his mother out of a coma, Ralph becomes a convert to the church of running, and determines to win the Boston Marathon.

"T" is This Old Cub (2004)
« Reply #5061 on: September 24, 2008, 11:52:35 am »
Plot:  Filmmaker Jeff Santo paints a moving portrait of the man some have called the best player who's not in the Baseball Hall of Fame: Ron Santo, a man he simply called "Dad". Reflecting on his father's 40 year career as a Chicago Cub third baseman and on-air commentator, the director combines vintage game footage with interviews with former teammates and fans, featuring anecdotes from Ernie banks, Fergie Jenkins, Bill Murray, and Gary Sinese.

"Y" is Yrrol (1994)
« Reply #5066 on: September 24, 2008, 09:35:45 pm »

Peter Dalle directed, co-wrote, and acted in "Yrrol."  He played the following roles:

  • Husband
  • Airline passenger
  • Pilot
  • Man in bar
  • Bartender with no pants
  • Salvation Army soldier
  • TV salesman
  • Kidnapper
  • Tommy Hagström, TV reporter
  • Manfred Wunderbaum
  • Man playing tennis
  • Inventor

From IMDb:  Peter Dalle has a way to twist a movie to the extent that the beginning is being forgotten. He begins with a very simple story and ends up with something else that is just as simple. It's just that the way to the end is... special (in a very good way). This is exactly what he has done in "Yrrol." It is impossible to keep track of all the twists and turns. I have seen this movie more times than I can count, and I discover something new every time I see it....

Wildcard "Z" is Bend it Like Beckham (2002)
« Reply #5067 on: September 24, 2008, 10:16:04 pm »

Plot:  Of East Indian origin of the Sikh faith, the Bhamra family have been settled in Great Britain for several years. They have two daughters, Pinky and Jessminder. While Pinky is in the process of getting married, Jessminder is preparing to play football - which is not acceptable to her parents. But Jessminder knows she is good at the sport, and she does receive considerable encouragement. Her parents are clearly uncomfortable with their daughter running around in shorts, chasing a big ball, instead of being clad in a traditional salwar khameez, and learning to cook East Indian recipes. Jessminder must now decide what's important for her. To make matters worse, a football tournament is arranged on the very day of her sister's marriage. Will Jessminder be able to play, or will her dreams be shattered?
