Not having a bad day (yet--knock on wood!), but thought this thread is a great idea. No matter how bad things might get, there's usually some positive angle one can put on it.

This is a very thoughtful thing to do, snavel (what is your real name again? What does your username mean?). I shall come here when it happens!

I'm having a bad aspect to my day.  I just spent non-stop time with some of the Brokies I love, and just said goodbye to my last one who dropped me off at the airport.  I'm sitting drinking iced tea, and surfing BetterMost while waiting for my plane.  I love my Brokie friends and am sad to be parted from them physically.

I had a bad day. My boyfriend flew back to England this morning, and I spent the day alone with my animals.  Cry

I'm not sure when I'll see him again. We're going to try and get him back out here sometime during Christmas, but I don't know.

I've had a bad week. The organisation I work for has been attacked on the front page of the newspapers and pilloried in the New South Wales Parliament this week, today included. We were all over the television new again tonight. Without going into the morbid details (and they are, literally, morbid), suffice to say that I wouldn't swap places with our Chief Executive for all the tea in China. He's really in the hot seat right now. Everyone in his office, me included, has been under a lot of pressure this week. It'll blow over in time and we'll survive (it's a Government organisation) but I have a terrible feeling it'll get worse, before it gets better. Thank goodness it's a long weekend in Oz this weekend, with a public holiday on Monday. I need it!  Cool

Well I don't know if anyone is interested by I'll write it out anyway.

Shortly after I bought this house and the male behind me found out I was a single female he has started bothering me but I have stood up to him. I also told neighbors about his harassment (one good neighbor has since moved replaced by jerks) I would not let him intimidate me. I recently found out that he is telling everyone in the neighborhood that I am a racist. Which is of coarse a filthy lie and my opinion that only a true racist could start a lie like this.

I found out because the one neighbor started yelling it at me. At least I finally know why I have had a rock thrown at my car, been harassed by kids. Items in my front yard damaged, pointed at. Yet when I had asked people what the problem was they lied to me and said they didn't know what I was talking about.

I took my Star Of David plaque off my front deck because I was worried I would find it smashed in the driveway. What I don't get is why no one has come to me directly and just asked me about what they have heard. I think they love this lie because they can now point their fingers at the single female in the neighborhood and then no one will know about the white hoods in their closet.

My mother survived nazi germany has a 1/2 Jew and being raised by her was not easy. I have a major problem with the stand by mentality; If it doesn't effect me why should I care" It's probably one of the reasons I open my mouth when I hear meanness and slurs.

Anyway I'm just sick of my anxiety going up everytime I drive up to this place. I think these people are cowards who enjoy bothering someone they see as weaker than themselves. I know my mother told me at the end of WWII how the nazis ran like scared little girls when it was over. I think these people are the same.

Kerry, a hug to you. Sounds like you are being judged, and battered with tire irons, and no-one cares about the other side of the story.

Bad things happen, and that is very sad. It's a pity, though, that the media jump on, and politicians pass the buck to, public servants who are, emotionally, also victims, and working their butts off with stretched resources to achieve good things the other 99.9% of the time. They have little chance of getting media coverage of that. It's not sensational.

Take heart. I'm sure most folk are intelligent enough to understand the real causes.

The media knows that there are always those who like an opportunity to judge for the occasional feeling of superiority that it gives them. People like that need our sympathy.

Hang in there, friend. And have a relaxing weekend.

Thank you everyone for your hugs and support. Our organisation (health) has  approx 5,000 personnel and what went amiss was in a particular area far from me. However, I work directly with the Chief Executive and the buck stops with him. Thanks again to you all. Your love and support means a great deal to me at this stressful time.

I agree. It could be that there are other people in your neighbourhood who are also being terrorised by the same people terrorising you. The police could be building-up a dossier on these bastards. I can't imagine how dreadful it must be, not to feel safe in one's own home. My heart goes out to you, Wishes. I hope this matter is soon resolved for you.

Wishes, I hope things get better for you. I know what it feels like. I had a similar problem in my own neighborhood, partly due to my sexuality, and partly due to a fist fight between my roommate and some neighbors down the road from me. The whole thing escalated out of control and people in the neighborhood started picking sides. Soon my house was pelted with eggs, dead fish were thrown on my porch and slurs uttered as people walked/drove past my house. Somebody even mailed me a box of dog crap. But I found comfort in my allies. And I had many of them. I'm sure you do too. Find out who they are and keep in touch with them. It's an awful feeling NOT to feel comfortable and safe in your own home! I will be sending you many positive thoughts.

It never ceases to amaze me.  And I dont know why it shouldnt.  How people can make a mountain from a grain of sand.  Building up piles of hate inside, and spitting it at others.  These dreadful people must be so very unhappy and miserable in their own life.  They have to tear down others in order to feel big.  Its human nature at its most vial and distasteful.  I despise those that
seek to give hate and meanness for no reason.  Bullies are such cowards.  They also seem to feed at the trough of swill, of rumor and innuendo.

So sorry for all of the fear and pains you have all suffered....    Sad       Sad

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a spot out in the country for "Brokieland" where we could move if we wanted to and all live in harmony?

I don't have too much neighbor trouble, but someone turned me in a few years ago and said my dogs barked (it must have been while I was at work because they didn't bark at night) and now they have to stay inside or I risk big problems.

I liked it better when I lived out in the country. My nearest neighbor couldn't hear even if my dogs did bark--too far away.

Not so much a bad day for me but a sad incident and something to reflect on.

My sister & her 3 girls (9yo, 5yo and 4yo) lives in a little village about 10 miles from me called Monkton. Its a fairly close knit little place and all the kids play together. ther 4 yo with the 11 yo etc.

My 9 year old nieces best friends big sister (who was 11) hung herself on Tuesday evening.

Seems to have been a very spur of the moment thing - she had been out playing and had spoken to my niece only an hour or so earlier.

No real reason. At that age trivial little things are such a big deal.

I feel so sorry for the family - they are such a lovely family and they are heartbroken. The little sister was round with my niece last night (she was bored in the house with adults all around - she only had the one big sister and she wanted out of the house) and apparently she seems to be dealing with it remarkably well.

So sad. 11 years old for goodness sake. RIP Kara.

Very tragic, Kelda. The sisters will probably need counseling. The parents will never get over it.

Kerry, I was very sorry to hear about your situation at work. I hope things get better for you too, buddy!  Smiley

Crikey, that's terrible, David. Has it stopped now? Has it been resolved? I'm very lucky in that I live in a high-rise building,  close to the city, within Sydney's gay precinct. People in my building are typical big-city people, who keep to themselves and mind their own business. It's not at all unusual to stand in a full elevator in my building with not a word being spoken, even though we are all, technically, neighbours. Friends visiting from the country or outer suburbs will sometimes say "Hello" to people in the elevator. It's sad that their friendliness is viewed with suspicion and silence. But that's big city people for you. Personally, I'm comfortable in this environment and would not be happy to be chummy with my neighbours. That's life in the city for ya!   Undecided  I hope your neighbourhood problems have been resolved, David.

Kelda,

Your story of the tragedy of the 11 year-old is so sad.

It's bad enough when adults are stressed to their limit and come to that point of despair.

The pressure on young kids in our present times is terrible.

My heart goes out to the family and friends who are bearing this pain.

Not so much a bad day for me but a sad incident and something to reflect on.

That's a tragic story, Kelda. My heart really goes out to them. Children are resilient and will move on but I have grave concerns for the parents of the deceased child. It'll be with them forever now. Very sad.

Hi Kerry,

I hope the situation at work settles down soon, and you will feel better.

And I hope you can enjoy the weekend without thinking too much about it. It's glorious weather for the spirit, isn't it?

I'm off to Queensland , Sunday, for a week, but will log in when I can. I do enjoy Bettermost, and might have more time for that now.
Might need a spirit lift, too. I have a handicapped daughter there being subjected to such discrimation at work she has had to take a week off (she works for the Gov't), and she lives alone, which doesn't help. My son is there, too, and is battling cancer. So ... there are a couple of kids up there who desperately need some comforting.

Thank you for your best wishes re my present unfortunate work situation, Rob. I hope that it will have all settled down by the time you return from Queensland. Or, at least, be out of the headlines!  Undecided

You are so right, this glorious Spring weather is, indeed, good for the spirit. It doesn't get much better than today, weather wise. Sydney at its best. Pity we couldn't have had weather like this for APEC. I love the rain, though.

I was very sorry to hear of your daughter's experience of discrimination at work. I'm not sure about in Queensland, but certainly here in NSW, there is legislation in place to prevent against discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace. Has she got a good solicitor? Tell her to sue their pants off. The buck stops with her employer. It is her employer's duty of care to prevent a workplace situation of discrimination from arising. It must be very stressful and hurtful for her. I hope it's resolved soon for her. And also for your son. What's his prognosis like? Where's the cancer? How old is he? I know you'll give your son and daughter lots of love while you're there with them in Queensland. And love is so therapeutic. It's probably the most therapeutic thing one can give to another.

Safe journey. Talk soon. K.  Cool

I just embarrassed myself.  Tongue

I looked at my cell phone and noticed (or I THOUGHT I noticed) someone who called and I missed it. So I called them back and they DENIED they called me. I was like "yes you did call because it's right here on the screen" and they said something like "no I didn't. I never called you today". Well this went back and forth until I got sick and tired of arguing and hung up the phone. Just now I looked at my screen and the call was gone! Well, to make a long story short, I accidently looked at my "contacts" screen instead of the "missed call" screen. So I called them back and apologized.

Okay. I know it's not EARTH SHATTERING or anything, but I felt like a damn fool!  laugh

Goodn ess me.  This is such a sad day of bad days.  Kelda, even people on the perorifory
of those events feel terrible.  I know from personal experience, it is hard for even friends to understand and get over.  The poor family will never heal entirely.  It is something they will carry forever.
Underdown I hope you get to spend some quality time with your children.  Sounds like
you all need some together time. (((((((hugs)))))))) Turn to your Bettermost friends for support.

Thanks for those kind thoughts, folks. I'll tell them you are thinking of them.  Smiley

I'm just about to head off on the long drive.

Hi Kerry. My daughter is, actually, a lawyer herself, with Queensland Natural Resources (water): typically underfunded. They do have laws, and she is certainly no dummy, but the department head seems to think that if she is doing the job, she should work just as hard as the able bodied (like, them). He says he is not telling her to, but makes it plain that it would not be good for her career if she doesn't. The public service was her only option. She has been working on her masters in environment and planning law as well, not long recovered from a busted knee (she trips over a lot) and a recent dose of Gardia, and is just about at the end of her tether. But she is very stubborn, if rather timid at times, lives on her own and is very independent, and will bounce back, I'm sure.
Hmmmm. That should be in the discrimation thread, I suppose.
My son was diagnosed with t/cancer a while back. Had a half operation and very minimal treatment because they thought they had caught it and, at 26, he doesn't want to miss out on having children. It is the most aggressive form of 3, apparently, and his tests are still positive. So, he has some hard decisions to make. He is the strong silent type, and doesn't want to accept that he might not make it. At the same time, he wants to make sure his afairs are in order (he's a very meticulous person).

Had better get on the road, hey. Will give me a change to think about the therapeutic properties of love, and lots of other things.

Take care all.

No, not earth shattering, but certainly very disconcerting. A strange thing happened to me the other morning, that was also quite disconcerting. I've been tying  a necktie around my neck every morning of my life for more years than I care to remember. It's always the same process - a standard Windsor knot. I could do it upside-down under water. Or, at least, I thought I could. On this particular occasion, I completely forgot how to tie my necktie! And the more I tried, the more confused and frustrated I became. I ended up with what looked like an OK knot, but it wasn't a proper Windsor knot! The following morning, I was quite nervous about it happening again. As it turned out, I had no trouble the following day and have experienced no difficulty since. Just one of those spooky aberrations life throws at us from time to time I guess. Like your experience with the phone, David, it wasn't earth shattering, but disconcerting all the same.

Hi Melissa!  Cheesy

I'm sure Jan-Willem knows who Danny Nucci is! Danny played Fabricio in "Titanic", one of Jack's friends. I think I remember you telling me your boyfriend likes that movie. He would remember Fabricio. Danny also co-starred in "The Unknown Cyclist", a comedy/drama about a group of friends bicycling together in a fund raising marathon for AIDS. He played a bisexual in that movie.

He's so cute!  Cheesy

Still can't get to sleep.  Been a bad day all round here at the Matrix house.   Cry

I had to put one of my dogs down today.  Bailey (short for Baileys Irish Crème Princess, because that’s what color she was)   was my oldest, an 11 year old female and she had a cancer growing in her sinus two years ago but did well with surgery and Chemo.  But lately she’s been not her self, sleeping lots, very clingy and decreased appetite.  The Vet found a new malignant growth in her sinus that had metastasized to her liver. Even an untrained eye like mine could see the growths on the x-rays.   There was nothing to be done and since I did not want her to suffer needlessly we made arrangements for the Vet to come round  our house this evening and Bailey died peacefully in her home, in her bed, in my arms with Bob and the other dogs around her surrounded by love.

We are going to miss her so much.   She was my Grand Dame and alpha among my other dogs.  She kept the younger ones in line.  A bark from her would settle them right down.  I got her as a puppy right after my Mother died.  She was my first dog as an adult.  Whatever will we do without our beautiful girl?  Bailey, my baby-girl, my friend, my soulmate...you gave me, us so much love, joy and laughter. We are, all of us, inconsolable.   Good Night Sweet Princess it was my very great privilege being your Fur-Mommy.

I am reminded of Lord Byron’s ode to his dog Boatswain …. Anyone who has ever loved  and lost a dog will agree…

Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man, without his Vices.  This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog.  ~George Gordon, Lord Byron, "Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog"

I was so deeply saddened to hear of your loss, Dottie. I still hold treasured memories of my dearest childhood friend, Toots, my beautiful German Shepherd dog. She was my constant companion, my protector, my guardian and my confidant, during a somewhat turbulent period in my life. She died in 1964, when I was 14, and I remember her with the deepest fondness and love to this day. As with Bailey, it was cancer that took Toots from me. I have no doubt, Dottie, that Bailey will continue to live on in your heart, just as my Toots lives on in mine.

RIP Bailey

To have been loved by a good and noble dog.
Is more enobling than to have the crown and jewels of a king.
You have held honesty and truth in your arms.  No falsehoods to portray.
Never forget they have given wihout expectations.  They have loved without
        guile.
Forever in your heart to warm you in the nights dark breath.

Dearest Dottie...Peace be with you and Bob and your dogs . I just read your sad news about your beloved Bailey. I hope to find an appropriate e-card to send. Tears filled my eyes as I read your e-mail and as I write this. I am not good with words as others of the BetterMost Community but maybe I will find some words to send you soon.

Epitaph to a Dog

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
The praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a DOG,

who was born in Newfoundland May 1803

and died at Newstead Nov. 18, 1808.

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown by Glory, but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And stories urns record that rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!
By nature vile, ennoble but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on – it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one – and here he lies.

That is a beautiful thought to read after an extremely traumatic past week trying to be a pillar of strength to a couple of offspring, and taking their frustrations and anger at life.
When all is said and done, the best support we can give to people is to be like a dog. To just love them unreservedly and unconditionally.

As you know from the banner a lot of Southern California is on fire.  I have lived here many years now and am use to the drought and the fact that every fall we have a very high incidence of wildfires but every few years we seem to have one that becomes a firestorm.  A full sixty five miles of highway 15 north and south bound was closed today.  I am so glad the college suspended classes today and tomorrow so my husband was not away from home when the highway closed, since he would have had to drive to Orange County then east to San Bernadino then south again to get home if he had.  If we stand on the deck in our back yard we can see the orange glow in the hills a full 10 miles south of us.  It's 9 o'clock at night and it's still 83 degrees and the wind is gusting at 40 MPH

I have an elderly friend who lives in Rancho Bernando and was evacuated at 8 this morning.  She went to friends in Del Mar on the coast, since the fires never make it to the coast, tonight I hear that Del Mar is under manditory evacuation.  I don't know where my friend is now.  Her son called me from NYC and he is terrified because now he can't reach her.  She doesn't have a cell phone, she's afraid of technology.  She has heart trouble and asthma all this smoke is very bad for her.

I have friends in Lakeside and Poway who have been forced to evacuate with small children, pets and horses.  Sitting here watching all the live feeds it is terrifying, like a little glimpse of hell on earth

Ooooh ... Dottie,

We, all of us, in Oz feel for you. It is making news here, because bushfire is one of the things we have in common, and we understand what you are going through.

Hope you will all be ok.

I hope you soon get good drenching rain, Dottie. That always seems to do the trick during the bushfire season here in Australia.

Stay safe Dottie.  Kiss

It truly is a terrible and frighteningly sad day Dottie..  Even for people that live in So Calif.  who are used
to these kinds of conditions.  It is so much more disasterous than has happened in my memory..A much wider
area involved.  I dont ever remember an area as large as from Magic Mt. to San Diego being involved..
Be safe and be well..I will be thinking of you..Jp wagoneer lives in that area also..Hope he is ok too...

Satellite Photo of California Fires showing the massive amounts of smoke and debrie in the atmosphere with fire areas highlighted in red

In San Diego County alone 300,000 people have been evacuated and the dozen wildfires had burned more than 700 homes and set 245,957 acres _ 384 square miles _ ablaze, and the destruction may only be the start. The wildfires claimed one life, in San Diego County, and injured 42. At least 16 of the injured were firefighters. at 8 am this morning estimates are 0-1% contained.

Today's forecast calls for hotter temperatures and more explosive wind gusts.   Cry
