Wednesday, December 27th, 2006.

One year ago today, I saw Brokeback Mountain for the first time, at the Loew's theater in Boston, Mass. It was the 11:10 am show. I can remember every minute of that day as if it was yesterday. One year later and look what has happened. If I knew then what I know now, would I have even gone into that theater? Of course.

Actually, remember the movies this time last year? We had lots of good things to choose from. This year, I look at the listings and nothing appeals to me. I did see The Holiday a few weeks ago and that was fun but not any sort of an award winner. Overall, I think 2006 has been a very mediocre year for movies.

Meanwhile, it is 33 degrees, cloudy, no snow. All the snow related businesses here in Maine are starting to worry.

Hmm,  I saw it on December 23rd 2005.   Then again a week later.   That is when the downward spiral began.    Depression,  grief, conflict with my best friend.   Perhaps ultimately causing me to turn to the wrong person for comfort.    Perhaps I can blame the movie for where I am today?     No, not really.

Yes, the movie did turn my life upside down.   But what we do with it afterwards is our own choice.    I focus less now on the movie and more on the benefits of meeting so many new fine people.

I am really focusing on this time last year, thinking about the movie. Actually, on Dec 26th I saw The Producers with my mother and Hannah. I had been looking forward to that and it was so...bad. Really bad, and really disappointing.

The  next day, Hannah and I took the bus to Boston, and I put her on the Acela to NYC to visit her friend Haley...the same Haley who is here visiting us this week. I had time on my hands so I bought "Under The Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer at the bookstore in South Station. I started reading that (never finished it, though) and made a good dent in it before heading to the movie theater.

The theater was large...190 seats as I recall. There were maybe 30 people in the theater by the time the previews started. Previews: Something New (remember that one? It lasted in the theater about a week. I saw it on DVD a few months ago); Freedomland (a bomb, remember?) and Thank You For Smoking (sort of funny...I did see this in the theater. It is nominated for a Golden Globe, despite the fact that it was made in 2005). After that, a little movie with Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau, reminding me to turn off my cellphone (another movie that came and went in a blinding flash of light...the remake of the Pink Panther).

And then, Focus Features, River Road Entertainment, the car on the road, and the first notes of the guitar...

As David says, I find myself thinking less and less about the movie, and more about the wonderful friends I have made. All of you have been my greatest BBM gift. Thanks...

Hugs,
