At first I was surprised they'd do a rather obscure (and dwindling) fish, but of course that was wrong. But I didn't think SPELT could be it, either, because that seems like one of those British past-tense styles -- like "smelt" for "smelled" -- for that matter, not typically not used here. Americans, of course, have some past-tense words like that -- slept, swept, wept -- but I have never seen "spelled" spelled SPELT.

It is probably the most obscure word I've seen in Wordle. It is a type of grain that is a hybrid of two types of wheat.

I also thought they wouldn't use the word spelt as past tense since it's an American game, but spelt is also a sort of flour, also called dinkel or emmer.
