at Wes and Edna's ranch, where Colson makes a successful foray into socializing in Tourmaline - and where Wes makes the official announcement that Ellery is the next Chief Deputy of Greenlea County.

Colson nodded, feeling a thrill of happiness in his chest. He had gotten through the barbecue, enjoyed the jollity and festive air surrounding Ellery’s colleagues and friends, the good food and beer, and found himself noticing once more that everything felt normal. Perhaps it was that he was breaking out of his long isolation, his hermit’s life, and the days he had spent with Ellery, gradually loosened him from his solitude, that he could quietly enjoy others around him talking without having to do more than nod, smile, and occasionally laugh at a particularly sharp witted joke, usually delivered by Ellery or Wes.

Where Colson & Ellery stopped for some breakfast the day they met.
You're the love of my life
And the breath in my prayers
Take my hand, lead me there

I can't forget the taste of your mouth
From your lips the heavens pour out
I can't forget when we are one
With you alone I am free

The ambulance that took Colson to the hospital after Bill had sucker punched him.

Suddenly Colson heard a voice crackle over the radio in the cab of the ambulance, which was separated by a narrow window.. “Sheriff’s department, go ahead.” He recognized the voice as that of Carol.

“We’re heading to Memorial with an injured party, asked to notify Deputy Sheriff Cantrell. Name of Colson Grey.”

There was a hesitation. “Repeat that emergency 1?”

“Grey. Colson. ETA at Memorial fifteen minutes. Head injury, can you notify Deputy Cantrell please?”

“Sure enough Emergency 1. Is there a code?” the voice, to Colson, seemed to shake a bit.

“No ma’am, patient is awake.”

“Whassat mean?” Colson mumbled, and the ambulance driver, noting perhaps that he was overheard, slid the window closed.

The boy smiled encouragingly. “It means your gonna live, sir.”

the dispatch area at the Sheriff's department where Carol can usually be found.

Ellery led the way in to the nondescript low brick building, and stopped before a fishbowl where a middle aged woman with tobacco-stained teeth and a rather large bouffant hairdo broke her sullen expression with a wide smile when she saw the lean deputy stride in the door.

Definitely not Colson's style!

“Wayne? Ellery -- if he wasn’t workin the bar I’d swear he was underage.”

“A little girlish for yer style too...”

“That too. Can’t see hangin around with a boy wearin earrings.”

Ellery laughed. “Well there’s that. And it’s only one earring. Supposed ta let guys know, ‘hey I’m queer.’”

“I think the way he walks an acts like my Aunt Francis pretty much does that.”

A nickname Pete gives to Colson at the Rose Hotel:

"Got ya, Irishman!" he cried, then just as suddenly, released his hold before Colson could reach back to grapple him, and padded rapidly down the dark hall, disappearing once again into gloom.
