The screenplay by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy is based on their 1947 stage musical of the same name.

"G" is The Glass Menagerie (1987)
« Reply #3561 on: April 21, 2008, 12:22:17 am »
Directed by Paul Newman, based on the Tennessee Williams play.

Joanne Woodward    ...   Amanda Wingfield
John Malkovich    ...   Tom Wingfield
Karen Allen    ...   Laura Wingfield
James Naughton    ...   Jim O'Connor (the gentleman caller)

Just a rambling aside - I got to see The Glass Menagerie live on Broadway with Katharine Hepburn, Sam Waterston, Michael Moriarty, and I forget who played Laura.  Sam Waterston sure was a babe back then.  I also saw him in my first live Shakespeare in Much Ado About Nuttin', also starring the very talented Kathleen Widdoes, whom I expected to go on to great things, but somehow didn't, though IMDb says she's been on "As the World Turns" the last few years, so that' probably a good living.

Another case where I enjoyed the book much more than the movie.

If this seems familiar, it's because the 1944 film was played earlier.

No Time for Sergeants was a 1954 best-selling novel by Mac Hyman, which was later adapted into a popular Broadway play and 1958 motion picture starring Andy Griffith, as well as a 1964 television series. The book chronicles the misadventures of a country bumpkin named Will Stockdale who is drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and assigned to the United States Army Air Forces.
