"X" is The Mountain (1956)

RottenTomatoes Synopsis: Spencer Tracy stars in this outdoor adventure as Zachary Teller, a retired Alpine guide lured back into mountain climbing by his fortune-hunting younger brother, Chris (Robert Wagner). A passenger jet has crashed high in the Alps, and Chris hopes to recover the jewels and money carried by the undoubtedly dead survivors. After a long and treacherous climb, the pair discovers one passenger is still alive--a young Hindu girl (Anna Kashfi). Soon it's brother vs. brother in a test of strength and wills over the girl, the loot, and getting down the mountain alive. Director Edward Dmytryk (MURDER MY SWEET, THE CAINE MUTINY) nicely captures some eye-popping Alpine scenery while carving out this rugged, character-driven story. Tracy is a little too portly and gray to be climbing mountains, but he knows how to act the role of a spiritually intrepid adventurer. Robert Wagner comes off well in one of his early roles as the greedy brother.i]

The book reminds us of the scene with a volcano.

My favorite Bond theme, sung by Nancy Sinatra (2:51).

All right folks, time for a little "free for all."

In this round, you can post any movie you like (appropriate to the alphabet, of course, and unplayed movies only, please) but you have to tell WHY you posted it. A special favorite? A movie you walked out of in the theater? A movie that has always intrigued you but you've never seen? Something else?

Once again, get your creativity juices flowing and have fun!

"A" is Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001)

I chose this movie because, not only is it Canada's first feature-length fiction film written, produced, directed, and acted by Inuit (in the Inuktitut language) but it's also one of the best films Canada has ever produced.  (And all for under $2 million)  A sweeping epic with universal themes that resonates way beyond its limited geography, a masterpiece.

==REVIEW==
"The Fast Runner" is not merely an interesting document from a far-off place; it is a masterpiece. Mr. Kunuk's film, which won the Caméra d'Or for best first feature at last year's Cannes International Film Festival, is much more than an ethnographic curiosity. It is, by any standard, an extraordinary film, a work of narrative sweep and visual beauty that honors the history of the art form even as it extends its perspective.-  AO Scott, New York Times

Forgettable movie, but notable for a radiant pre-LOTR Elijah Wood.

I've watched this one countless times with my younger daughter, a ballerina-wannabe.  She'd be the first to tell you that Ethan Stiefel rocks!

Because I saw this (very, very bad) film at the Provincetown International Film Festival, and got to meet Cassandra Peterson, who is bizarrely normal in real life.
