Hello everyone! Thank you for your wishes! It's so cute! Though I cannot see the haloween kitten Kelda!

I received quite a number of e-mails, SMS and phone calls - it's very nice! And I apologize for not being more active, more present in the BM forum. I haven't abandoned! I'm also happy to see that there's still some of the 'old crowd' around, or back.

I haven't seen BBM for many months now - ever since I got the DVD some time in the spring of last year. It's very odd, because I want to watch it again and I know it's sitting there on my shelf, but I kind of fear, that the emotions won't be anymore when I watch it again..

Well, but I have been to the movies a lot and there is some good stuff out there. None will top BBM, but I'm happy to see that there are always some good quality movies to see. I have been ordering quite a few DVDs online (Head On, The Unknown Cyclist, Highway, Parting Glances, Eating Out, Oz (4th season), Heights, The Dying Gaul, Third Man Out, Lilies, Perfect Son, Wings (1st + 2nd season), Riptide (1st season), Madagascar Skin) and more. I haven't watched them all yet, but I particularly liked 'Heights', 'The Dying Gaul' and the 'Perfect Son'. I have yet to discover 'Wings' (I love Steven Weber and Timothy Daly - so it can't but be great) and I'm looking forward to watching the 'Riptide' episodes again (some will be new to me).

In October I started a monthly watercolour workshop and I was very sceptical when I went for the first time (I had a friend pushing me to join). I thought it would mean painting pretty landscapes all the time, but gosh was I wrong! I'm amazed at how much you can 'let off steam' with it. I'm a total beginner, but it's great fun!

In February I will take part in a photo exhibition of my Photo Club. We'll have a rather nice venue this year - in the middle of Brussels. The 'theme' is Brussels.. In February I will also be travelling to Albania for a week, for election observation (I have been doing election observation for 4 years now - once or twice a year). It's lots of work, quite exhausting, but always a great experience!

Well, that was a short 'update' of my life the last few months. I'll have an excuse now, not to post much in the coming weeks..

Cute the big and small kitty pictures..! I have a sweet tooth and all your cake and mini-cake pictures make my mouth water..

Fabienne, I AM a beginner with respect to colour and watercolour. I used to draw a lot as a teen (see below), but my very few attempts at colour painting or colour drawing ended in the bin. I did not like any of it. I have almost stopped drawing now (but not indefinitely, I hope) and this watercolour workshop really gets my creativity going again. The teacher, without knowing me, immediately noticed and commented on my ‘drawing skills’.. *meproud*.. And please hide that Ben&Jerry’s icecream, ‘kay! Do you want me to explode?!

Sashca! So many beans! So many! And Ennis brought them!? Oooh! Oo..h.. I kept a few cans – for when the going gets tough.. up there on the mountain..

Moremojo, technically you were late with your birthday wishes, ‘cause I got them on the 19th here..

Milli, during the watercolour workshops we do use and mix watercolour with acrylic and crayon some time. I like acrylic too, but I think I’ve discovered my love for watercolour. What are you painting?

Well, I don't know if they are photogenic, but they don't shy away from my camera andthe flash (when I use it). I must say that my camera is very very silent indeed.

Jude, I can't remember if I told you that this year i made the decision to find a new home for my cat, because I have been allergic to her for four years, after a lifetime of living and snuggling with cats.

Well for her, the story has a happy ending, or transition - she is living with a wonderful, single massage therapist who seems to be giving her a life of little balls to bat, special pillows by the window, and all the free massage she can soak up.

But for me, I am catless.

So I have decided to become one of those aunties that some women get to be. I will dote on other people's cats, mostly from afar.

Brokie and Sayif and Sayif's two siblings, R.I.P., have provided me with so much vicarious kitty pleasure.

Thank you so much for your wonderrful photos, and now videos, of them.

All this talk on matters feline got me thinking of a poem I read over the weekend, by Christopher Smart (1722-1771), namely, on which he considers his cat Jeoffry (this, bear in mind, is only an excerpt of the original, quite long text):

Believe it or not Scott, but as I am reading Smart's poem, Brokie came along to 'check on me'. I had the time to take this picture and she's gone again..

Hmm.. not quite agreeing..

I don't stop feeding these cats (too afraid they'll die, like the other two..) and it doesn't stop them from knocking things over and distroying paper..

I just had to let you know, j.U.d.E., what a connection I felt seeing that picture of Brokie in front of your computer screen, with my post being read and quizzically considered. It made this community we have formed online seem so real, to a degree that I haven't quite felt apart from actually meeting some of you guys face to face. There's a little bit of me floating around all over the world, really affecting people's lives! That just makes me so happy!

Now, onto Mr. Smart's opus, I too couldn't quite recognize my Smooch, Zoot, and Chelsea in everything he was writing. But remember, Smart apparently suffered from a mental illness--which no doubt accounts for the even longer original version of this curious poem!

I'm sorry to read though, that you have been allergic and that you had to give away your cat. I did not know! That's too sad, but it seem as if you have found it a wonderful new home! That must be very comforting. You are lucky to have found someone you like to take your cat, though it must have been a really heartrending moment! How did you manage?!

You see, my working contract ends in June and if I don't want to be unemployed I should start looking for a new job NOW! The thing is, it's not easy to find anything that interests me here in Brussels (I'm being picky and a little scared too, that I'm not 'good enough') so I'd really really like to try and find work somewhere outside Europe (places where you don't take along pets, children etc.) - I've done it before and worked in a post-conflicht country for 6 monhts. But I actually purposely don't apply to positions that might be interesting, out of fear, they might take me(!), because I just DON'T know what I'd do with my cats! How do you give away your pet?! Aaah! The thought alone kills me, but right now it seems to be getting in the way of my future. It sucks! I think if I knew for how long I would be going abroad I'd try to rent my flat together with my cats, if it was only for 6 months or a year. But it will be way difficult to find a tenant who'd want to 'rent' two cats with the flat. Stupid really! But I have this troubling me every single day!

Da*n! I need to get my act together!! $:-\$

By the way - I love massaging my cats (don't know if they like it, but they don't run away, so..

Clarissa, thank you for the tip! I hadn't heard of craigslist but I checked and I clicked on 'Belgium' and there are flats to rent, buy etc. among other things. I have bookmarked the site and will use it when it will become necessary... ..

I like your added 11th line in Smart's poem! Pets are adorable beings and it's nice to know that a lot of people treat them well. Even though the opposite is true too, sadly enough.

At night, I go walk my cats. Really! They follow me through the front door and then around my building. It's a 7-minute walk or so, but still they seem to enjoy it a lot, even when it's freezing cold outside, like tonight. I've met people a couple of time. An elderly man asked me if I was walking my dog and I said, err, no.. and pointed at Brokie.. Another time they wouldn't come back inside with me (they always take their time, but eventually follow me back inside) and this neighbour came along. I told him I was walking my cats and that they wouldn't come back inside. The man actually tried to catch Brokie and Sayif to help me get them back into the apartment. Needless to say, neither Brokie nor Sayif let themselves be caught by a stranger!

He gave up after a while, when I had convinced him, that they could always go around to the back of the building, up the little wall, through my garden and the cat flap back inside. ..

Scott, you are so right about the connection. It's been almost a year now for me at BM and the last 9 months or so, I haven't posted much. Ever since I got the DVD in the spring last year, I haven't watched BBM again(!). Still, I never completely abandoned BetterMost, so because of my Birthday and Kelda's post I started posting a bit more often again and actually only now found out about the BBM Radio. Well, not 'found out' but finally clicked on the icon... And I was listening to one of the many beautiful songs, whilst reading your poem, whilst taking that picture and I felt so 'at home' that evening...

And when you say 'bits of you are floating around all over the world, affecting people's lives', that gives me goose-bumps.. Rufus Wainwright is singing right now (The Maker Makes) and before BBM I had never heard of him and since then, I've seen him live on stage and discovered him as an actor in 'Heights' recently. Had no idea he was in that movie. What a great surprise! It's like a circle or the 'six-degree-separation' thing (which I was reading about, only because I was investigating on Stanley Milgram - a psychologist, who maybe knew of Christopher Smart's condition.. They both died quite young at almost the same age.) - it's all connected - we are all connected somehow, in ways we wouldn't think would be possible. It's a nice feeling..

* 15 JAN 09 – MLK Jr 80th Birthday [* 15 JAN 29 - † 4 APR 68 .. 39 years old]
* 17 JAN 09 – Michelle Obama 45th Birthday
* 18 JAN 09 – Henry's birthday, my birthday
* 18 JAN 09 – the Barack Obama Express
* 19 JAN 09 – MLK Jr day
* 20 JAN 09 – Barack Obama’s Inauguration as 44th president
* 22 JAN 09 – Heath Ledger’s first anniversary [* 4 APR 79 – † 22 JAN 08 .. 28 years old]

I feel like I am in pretty good company in this month of January.. Happy and sad collide.

I feel connected with what is going on in Washington, as I was an international observer for the US elections in Oct/Nov 2008. I passed the memorial stone of MLK Jr, dedicated by Bill Clinton and I was at the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool on 9 November 2008.

I left my mark too..

9 NOV 2008 (my job as observer was over that day, there was no need to be non-partisan any more..

Wow, I didn't know this. That's great!

I know you've been an international election observer before (Albania, wasn't it?), but I didn't know you were in the US for the election. It was great even in front of the TV, must have been much better to be in the middle of it.

I told my girls what day is today and we'll watch the inauguration together.

I know. I kept it quiet on purpose. I was quite nervous about it for some reason and didn't want anything to jinx it.. $:-\$ My team partner and I were dispatched to Montana and Idaho.

Yes, it was Albania and other countries before that.

I might actually go back to the States (+ Canada) this summer - San Francisco and Seattle and Vancouver. We'll see.
