Tourmaline, home to Colson and Ellery

But one day, leafing through the city paper from Tourmaline, the county seat in nearby Greenlea. He saw a small section that said "Men Seeking Men." It didn't say "Queer" and it didn't say "Gay"...but in that column, beneath a string of baffling ads with indecipherable acronyms he saw an ad for the "Red Stallion Men's Bar" and the relatively discreet caption "Men Only." His heart quickened slightly. As ignorant as he was of the Queer World, he knew what that meant, and he took down the address and consulted a map, painstakingly tracing the route southeast along the interstate 285 and then onto the 666 north of Morenci where he had at one time worked in the pit before they closed it.

Investigation that Ellery undertakes to solve the mystery of Adam's death.

“You on some sort of unofficial inquiry, Ellery?”

“You might say. Not much of an inquiry, cause it ain’t much of a case.”

“Do I get ta know?”

“If ya don’t talk about it, sure.”

Wes gave him a disgusted look.

“All right all right. Suspicious motor vehicle death, two years ago. Poorly investigated, an it might be a murder disguised as an accident.”

“And what has this ta do with you?”

“Nothin. It has ta do with Colson. Old lover, disappeared, never got in touch again, an found out later he was dead and never learned why.”

The following morning they brought Colson downstairs for another X-ray, in a wheelchair this time, still not allowing him to walk on his own, but the doctor was still doubtful considering how severe Colson’s pain still was. “There could be a hidden fracture the X-ray just doesn’t pick up. We’d like to keep you another night and do this again tomorrow morning, see how the pain goes.”

And, of course, Colson refused to stay another night, and we all know now about that hidden fracture!

The way f**ckin' Bill likes his boys.
You're the love of my life
And the breath in my prayers
Take my hand, lead me there

I can't forget the taste of your mouth
From your lips the heavens pour out
I can't forget when we are one
With you alone I am free

Baker - Adam's mother:

“Mornin, I am lookin ta speak with Zelda Baker.”

“This is Zelda Baker...” came the thin, reedy voice of an elderly woman.

“Name is Cantrell, ma’am, from the Sheriff’s department in Tourmaline. Beggin yer pardon ma’am, but as you may be aware, the case of your son Adam’s death is still open in Santa Fe, an I was asked to help out somewhat in the investigation.”
