ABCs at the Movies: The Doubles Round!

The legendary Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was a great influence on many musicians and his performances were so highly provocative in their originality that even today they can be considered “revolutionary”.

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins met Nicholas Triandafyllidis and commissioned him to make a documentary about his notorious life in and out of the music industry. Screaming Jay came to Greece and he gave his very last concerts in Thessaloniki and Athens, before his sudden death in Paris in 2000.

Having been left a legacy of confidential sessions and footage of his final live performances, Triandafyllidis completed the film with a little help from Jay’s friends: Jim Jarmusch (director of Ghost Dog), Bo Diddley, Eric Burdon (The Animals), Rudi Protrudi, Diamanda Galas, Arthur Brown (The Crazy Word of Arthur Brown), Andre Williams and others.

He remained faithful to their common vision:

“A film full of positive energy, an endless source of life.”



The connection to Rakushka? Greece...Athens, specifically. They both have scenes filmed there.

Both Screamin' Jay Hawkins:  I Put a Spell on Me  and Ticker  are movies from 2001, and both have a character named Frank.  Frank Ash played himself in Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Steven Seagal played Frank Glass in Ticker.

Ticker is set in San Francisco and so is Under One Roof.  -There was no way I was going to play Under Siege, I hate Steven Seagal.

An erotic romance about an adorable, closeted Chinese-American guy who falls in love with his mother's new tenant. Daniel (Wong) is a gay Chinese-American twenty-something who lives with his mother and grandmother in San Francisco. He is out to his friends, but certainly not to his mother, who is always trying to set him up with women. He keeps his life compartmentalized until a handsome gay man – Robert (Marks) moves in downstairs. They flirt with each other, and Robert comes onto Daniel – only to be rebuffed. Inevitably, they end up in the sack, and a tenuous relationship is formed. Their happiness is hampered by Daniel's wariness of a connection so close to home, with his meddling mom always around. As you can see from the poster, A View to a Kill takes place in San Francisco, as does Under One Roof.

Richard Burton, star of The Wild Geese, also starred as King Mark of Cornwall in Lovespell, a retelling of the Tristan and Isolde legend, with Kate Mulgrew and Nicholas Clay as the star-crossed lovers.

This George Kuchar short was made the same year as Lovespell and also stars a drunk Richard Burton, this time as a 12 foot tall Sasquatch

A film about a housewife obsessed with the idea of a large hairy creature, 12 feet tall, with big feet. Chronicles her eventual breakdown in no uncertain terms.
